Good observation ... the map clearly shows that if a low closes off, it won't be at 26.0ºN (not where the SSD estimate is), it'll have to be closer to 24.5ºN. Despite the appearance of the system in the satellite interpretations, the invest is still in disarray or terribly stacked ... the MLC and the broad area of low pressure are still separated by a good 1.5º or about 90 nautical miles.

I checked some of the Cuban buoys and couldn't find any sign of a west wind either....

Nicer Visible Image With Obs

#10 Postby wxman57 » Thu Aug 14, 2003 10:42 am

Nicer Visible Image with obs. Note the 1025+ mb pressure along the northern Gulf coast. Lowest pressure is west of Key West, but there's a clear mid-level circulation up north near 26.6N west of Ft. Myers. Also note that pressures are rising along the northern Gulf coast and at offshore buoys. Still no clear LLC, though:

This system hasn't done anything to rile islanders thus far. It has been nothing like what NHC advertised for the Keys--heavy rains and high winds. Winds haven't topped 15mph and NWS EYW has recorded less than .50" of pcpn since midnight. My station recorded .77" since midnight. Maybe something more will occur as the day moves on, but at this point this is nothing more than a series of thunderstorms moving across the island chain.

Thanks, wxman57 ... I saw one blip of NNW winds SW of Key West about 30 minutes before the current loop, otherwise, this map backs up my stance ...

Dry Tortoguas

#13 Postby wxman57 » Thu Aug 14, 2003 11:46 am

Note that the recording buoy near Dry Tortogas (that yellow plot just west of the keys with a 1016.9mb pressure and east winds 20kts) now has a NW wind.
