Unfortunately, this heat wave will likely increase GOM sea surface temperatures by a couple of degrees. Bonnie illustrated that water temperature, by itself, is not a catalyst for tropical development or intensity. However, if the westerlies and wind shear relax, and with water temperatures 88-90 degrees, the stage is set for a major hurricane in Caribbean or Gulf waters sometime in mid to late August. For us in the western GOM, the key will be the position of the high pressure ridge over the SE US. So far, the setup this year is more similar to 2007 than 2005 or 1969. Still uneasy, because there were 2 category 5 storms in 2007. Encouraging, though, in that both systems stayed well south with strong high pressure dominating the central GOM coast. Let's hope the ridge stays strong, or a trough sets up over the U.S. east coast. In 2006, that east coast trough turned nearly all storms into fish (out to sea) or weakened them significantly.

The heat is on! Excessive Heat Watch issued, and a Special Weather Statement. SWS is repetitive... just posted the Excessive Heat Watch below. It may seem silly, but there are many heat-related deaths each year. If you're going to be out this weekend, as I will be, drink plenty of fluids.

The heat index here was over/at 100 at 10pm!!!! That's crazy ridiculous!

Here it is shortly after 8am and it's already getting hot. Heat index already at 95 and supposed to get as high as 109. The birds are even quiet...not a single one chirping.

Edit to add 8/1 3:20pm 100 with a hi of 109. I feel sorry for my friends in lake charles whose a/c went out today.

Currently drooling as I look at the radar of that precipitation. Can you put some Cajun mojo on it and send it this way please? Sitting at 93f with 102f hi right now and it will only get hotter. Actually a little cooler than yesterday, but not cooler enough!!! Need rain too, Hard to believe we are at normal or above precip wise since I HAD to water 2 days ago just to keep hotter areas of the yard alive.

The showers look like they are trying to make a little further west. Nothing heavy, but I would just take some cloud cover for a few hours!

It's your turn for the heat david! :P We had more than our fair share of heat indexes 105-110! And as for the rain? I'm going to be very selfish about it. We're -12.72" for the year.

I'm currently vacationing in Monument, Colorado for a family reunion. 73 degrees during the day and 56 at night - in a house that doesn't even have air-conditioning. I can smell the vanilla and butterscotch smell of the ponderosa pines whispering in the mountain breezes in the backyard. I guess I'll plan to stay here and enjoy the view of Pike's Peak instead of going back to Dallas! Thought I'd just rub it in a little:wink: :cheesy:
