I think I'll go out and rent "Summer Of Sam" tonight. After all, it was in New York, during the summer, and during a blackout.

"Federal sources say that the power outage is affecting a number of states and began as a mechanical failure at the 14th St. substation and dominoed out to other areas." - from the WNBC webcast.

"I'm stuck in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacker!" - Chandler Bing.
Sorry, don't mean to make light of the situation. I too thought it was terrorism at first. Relieved to hear it's not. My daughter is a Friends fanatic (so am I, to an extent) so we keep playing that Friends ep over and over again......
What a mess up there. Sure hope the power comes back on quick.

Thanks Annette for the concern. Someone on another thread worried about Stephanie. But remember she's on her way to visit her dad, out west somewhere. So we can relax about her. Cleveland's 4 hours north of me, so we're good to go here. I'm sure we're on a different grid this far south. Has anyone noticed only Erie is affected? The rest of PA is okay, correct? That's a relief, but those poor folks in Erie. Nina said - oooh, it's Eeerie in Erie. I said Nina, let's not joke around, and then we could not get that Friends scene out of our minds......if you're a fan of that show, you'll know what I'm talking about. If not, forgive me.
Didn't know about the fire. Will check on that.

WOW! That must really suck..........hope like Hades it's not an act of terrorism.
We had a construction company last year hit a main fiber optic trunk, talk about shutting your world down, NUTHIN' worked, I mean NUTHIN'.....can you imagine if this were to happen AGAIN and the terrorist hit the MAIN fiberoptic trunk to the east coast, no atms, no 'puters', no nuthin'!

Good to see you on, too, king - looks like you're on the
very fringes of this!
Hmmm, Johnathan, I saw that report on MSNBC of a lightning
strike in Niagra, as well. Then, they say it could have been an
overload. The temps in NYC, today, were actually supposed to
reach just over 90°F, first time since July 5th. I can't see that
causing an outage due to overloading, though...???

Hmm...I went to P&C to get some food for dinner- they are letting people in one at a time, with a flashlight, and a security guard, to make sure you don't steal anything while the lights were out.
Also- None of the traffic lights worked, and the railroad crossings are all blocked off, so I had to drive between the arms (or whatever they are called) of the RR crossing. Hopefully power will be back on soon.

I also heard on MSNBC that some stores had sold out of candles. Most preparedness lists advise not to use candles since firefighters can't get through in case of a fire. So I wondered about all those NY'ers with candles. And then...it happened...they showed a fire of unknown origin, rising up into the night sky. I hope it wasn't related to someone simply trying to have light with a candle.
I hope everything stays safe there during the night, especially those walking to get home.
Nystate, take care.
Now if we can just get Vicki Lawrence to do a remake of her song, "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia."
That's the day that the lights went out up no-orth
That's the day that power grids went pfffffffft

I think it is WAY premature to be discussing causes...as the finger pointing is beginning before the power even comes back up in much of the affected area.
First we need to solve the problem...then determine the cause and have a central spokesperson for the situation.
Might even be too early to rule out terrorism...but even if it were, I would expect the announcements to say otherwise as nightfall approaches.
Scary time regardless.
Stay tuned.
