Actually I think that IS the eye. Looks pretty distinct to me.

Almost certainly a cat 2 at 5pm.

There is a cell on the west side of the eyewall causing a shadow now, but you can see the faint blue of a large eye opening to the right of the cell:

its a hot tower.. or over shooting top in the eye wall creating a slight shadow.. that would be the general area to look though ... but tight now I do not see anything yet.. but soon I imagine..

The models actually show that East Coast high moving to the right (closing Danielle's trough) and Earl moving up behind it

I wouldn't be surprised to see 85kts though which would be a Cat 2. I suppose "almost certainly" was probably premature but it's very very close at least.

The 1945 image confirms that the feature was a shadow of overshooting tops, not an eye.

I'd only bring it up to 75 kt (pressure 975mb) then let the NOAA plane see what is up and issue a Special Advisory if necessary.

As one would expect, then the trough comes through from the Great Lakes late week that will break the East Coast Heat Wave.

wxman57 is right, there is a spot of light blue. Looks like an eye opening to me.
