Barbara, sorry to hear about your water, that's a bite! Glad you can still communicate!!

I wanted to relocate last night but there was a 'hitch', which made me anxious, as I knew it would get bad before daylight. My power (and water) went out around 4am after some nasty squalls came through with gusts easily 50kt (am on North side at 1100ft up) and boy it was howling on the other side of my closed shutters. Had to open my fridge to get the small amount of cold food I was allowed to bring, which let all the cold air out, but oh well. Packed by candlelight and then the car between showers. Was very happy to find the battery to run the big iron gate during power outage was working, so was able to get off the property!! Small branches all over the roads, some lines down, and so many leaves you couldn't see the pavement. Coming down the private road here, I had to get out and drag a tree limb that covered the road and was 4' high.

Took a while here to get situated, unpacked, move the car and we moved a big planter outside. We've had some trouble with the generator a couple of times, but it is on now, what a BLESSING! And I sort of got my usual morning weather stuff plus Earl updates done only a few minutes ago. My hosts were on skype to UK family and we guided them to a really good NRL visible of this impressive 'cane, and the St. Martin radar of the eye - AWESOME! (I can't bring it up most of the time, so if anybody is successful, please save those snapshots for me! I bet Barbara would like to have them, too.)

We're hearing from one marina that they are really getting slammed, I hope the hauled boats don't fall over! We expect to lose internet/phone at any time, since it happens during regular storms without a hurricane, LOL! But, I told them I think it will stay on, think positive! I'm going to try and get outside on the porch to photograph the seas, but it's pretty dark despite being daylight. Seas are incredibly nasty. We are all hoping Earl moves far enough north that we don't get part of that thick S eyewall. This place is like a bunker, and I'm basically underground on 3 sides, tucked against a hillside about 400ft down from the top!

Yesterday afternoon the feeder band that have well shaked Guadeloupe has bring important poweroutages! Consequently, 4000 people are always without electricity today! Just amazing with "just a solid outer band" imagine if we were to deal directly with Earl!
Msbee and the other in the North be safe and dry!

Cycloneye must have lost his power because he hasn't posted in a while. He said that might happen.

Vieques Update (fwd)
By Gert van Dijken <gert at vandijken.com>
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2010 11:27:25 -0400 (EDT)

---------- Forwarded message ----------
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2010 10:59:31 -0400
From: Teena Anderson
Subject: Vieques Update

I am posting for Kate, her power is out. Still grey skies, sometimes heavy
rain, sometimes strong gusts of wind, currently Esperanza Bay has light
chop. Heard the waves on the north side of the island are wild. All is
well. Hopefully we will have power soon.

Report from STJ (St. John - USVI) -- power out for most of the island
By crabbys
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2010 11:30:12 -0400 (EDT)

I am in the states, but have had contact, by phone, from East End, Hurricane
Hole, Gifft Hill and the Bordeaux area (outside of Coral Bay) of St. John, USVI.

As of 10:30 a.m., all of the people I spoke with in those areas are without
power. East End went first around 7 a.m. followed by Zootenvaal (Hurricane
Hole), then Gifft Hill and the Bordeaux area around 10 to 10:30 a.m. Reports
are wind gusts in the 60 knot range, and a lot of waiting.

Hardlines are still working, but most folks have lost internet. Several people
involved with amateur radio and the local ham weather net have asked for storm
position updates from the National Hurricane Center, if I can continue to get a
call through; those are issued every three hours. If I am able to make
additional contact through the day, I will share any on-the-ground condition
reports.

John and Val in Cruz Bay -- good luck to you. To the folks and animals on St.
John and all the other islands, may God bless you, and may Earl be kind.

Phyllis

Update from Ponce (Puerto Rico)
By Pam Taylor
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2010 16:15:59 +0000

Wind has just picked up...lots of gusts and rain bands bending the trees (and blowing the avocados!), sticks and leaves blowing by! Thundering a bit to the north! Humidity at 63%, temperature at 82.6 F, barometer still steady. Got a text from my younger daughter in Cruz Bay, St. John, saying Earl hasn't hit fully there yet...wind gusts a bit over 20 knots. Will keep you posted. We are totally solar so no power outages expected.

Stay safe!
Pam

Cruz bay St John , the dinghy dock is getting washed over by waves
1pm

I just used Skype to call a CCT cell phone in the BVI and finally got through! My friend says the electricity has been off since 4am in the East End area. Gusts of wind come and go, it's raining. She talked to someone who talked to someone in Anegada, who said they were getting hit pretty badly but nothing specific. Anegada is a flat island with short trees, so I imagine it's pretty rough there.

I tried to look at a radar map, but it said it was down for maintenance. Helluva time to do maintenance on it.

TORRENTIAL RAIN courtesy of Hurricane EARL!
By Isabel Cerni
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2010 11:55:09 -0500

Good Afternoon!

EARL is now in the vicinity of the US Virgin Islands. We are having heavy rain with whiteout conditions; very windy, a veritable hurricane! EARL is making sure we get a share like all the other islands. Everyone was preparing for this, it was announced over and over again, it was discussed, warnings were out for flash flooding and just about every detail was covered. We could get as much as 12' of rain. This should go on for a couple of hours. I will post later with an update on conditions. God bless you.

Talked with Cycloneye by phone a few minutes ago. He is ok and his family too but there is not power were he lives. Until now, we don't have any report of fatalities, no major damages; a lot of rain, strong wind.
