It has been a beautiful day today on the southern outer banks. Not a cloud in the sky all day until now. Now can see some high distant clouds far to the south. Hot and muggy today, very light east winds.
I will attempt to post conditions when they start to get bad tomorrow and tomorrow night.

Beautiful day here in New Bern, NC. Pretty hot, but also a Carolina Blue sky. Wind is starting to pick up a little, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Very hot and very humid here in Wareham MA.....we are now under a Hurricane watch as we are at the entrance to Cape Cod. Forecasters on local media stations still sitting somewhat on the fence as to exactly how close Earl will come to us (closest point at the moment to where we live according to Storm Carib is 84 miles....) but as we all know, that could change as Earl travels up the coast tomorrow.

Word of the Day....Frustration and Confusion......only time will tell.

Will keep folks posted as things progress....prayers and thoughts to all in the path of Earl and their safety.

From WITN-TV:

Carteret County officials have issued a state of emergency.

They are calling for the "evacuation of the medically fragile population and low lying areas, manufactured and other fragile housing; particularly South River, North River and areas east of the North River Bridge. This includes all areas subject to sound side flooding."

Carteret County schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday.

Newport Middle School will open as a shelter at noon on Thursday. A special needs shelter will open at Leon Mann Senior Center at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Gretchen, understand the frustration and confusion, we just went through that down here. Big storm, little change makes big difference. All the best to anyone in the path of Earl, or possible path! Prepare early and well to reduce stress, stay safe!!

Emerald Isle NC reporting in
nice sunny day hot and humid
seems to have goten more humid tonight
went down to the pier twice once around 12 noon and the other time around 630 pm
the ocean has been builindg since lunch time
will check the pier out again tonight around 1130

Anyone from Long Island? We have family in Babylon. We called them last night and they just blew the whole thing off. They said storms were never bad up there. I'm worried about them and some other family in upstate New York who are supposed to be heading to the Jersey Shore for the holiday weekend. They insisted they were still going. They have me scared that they aren't taking this storm very seriously. Any wobble could send it much closer to them. Just wondering what the local news up there is telling folks.

I hope that the tourists heed the evacuation warning. It feels up my way that they are being very conservative with the forecast. The all news radio station in Philadelphia mentioned that a Tropical Storm warnbing was posted down at the NJ shore, but nothing else. I don't think that they want to create panic but it seems like they cover snowstorms with more vigor than this.

Very few people have even put in their outdoor furniture and most tourists I have talked to today adn this evenng at my business just see at is no big deal

It was a beautiful day here in Kitty Hawk. Beautiful evening so far. 24 hours from now it might not be so pretty.

Carteret County (Morehead City/Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle NC) has ordered a mandatory evac of Bouge Banks, starting at 5am. Shelter will be open at Newport Middle School. Special medical needs shelter open at Leon Mann senior center in Morehead City.

In other news..Feeling kinda hurricaney here on the crystal coast tonight. Sunset had low level clouds moving fairly quickly from east to west, and high clouds moving west to east. Nice breeze about 15 from the east. 5 to 6 foot long period swells breaking on the beach.
High tide will be around 1 to 2 oclock, which may add to the surge and sound flooding, since high tide will occur near the height of the storm.
latest wind forcasts calling for sustained hurricane force from extreme eastern carteret county to ocracoke to hatteras to pea island refuge. Onslow, Carteret, Dare, Hyde, and the counties bordering the sounds should have 50 mph sustained, and 30 sustained as far inland as I-95 corridor, all with higher gusts of course. Local mets and local models still indicate a possible landfall from Ocracoke north to Hatteras, but they are still preaching the official NHC path, just mentioning a possible landfall.

Soundside flooding on south end of pamlico sound may be as much as 7 feet in some areas, with as much as 5 feet on the banks.

Sounds like the fun will start tomorrow afternoon just after noon for eastern NC.
