At least 572 years have passed since the cane that occurred between 1278 and 1438. Surely, the world’s climate must have changed somewhat over that period. Of course, this is not to suggest that another monstrous cane couldn’t happen in the New York area today (the 1821 cane was only 189 years ago) but climate change should be one of the factors taken into consideration.

Re: 1821 Norfolk and Long Island hurricane
I had the privilage to go to Long Branch NJ last friday and hang around the beach during Earl, I could not imagine what a Hurricane like the Norfolk and Long Island Hurricane would do to this area based on what i saw then.

Re: 1821 Norfolk and Long Island hurricane
Most of the east coast were unaware on how bad Earl could have been. Imagine if the trough was a little bit slower and more amplified/negatively tilted. We could have had Earl going inland up the east coast as a major hurricane. It's been a while since we had a hurricane made landfall in the NYC/NJ metro area, I believe 1903 was the last NJ hurricane since 1938 was a long island hit. The population since that time has exploded and the property values are enormous.
Another 1821/Long Island type hits would be catastrophic and far costlier than Katrina. It will happen eventually and we won't be able to stop it, just prepare for it. However, seeing the lack of preparation for Earl is concerning because if Earl decided to wobble further west, the damage and death toll could have been awful.
