Where and when will the first landfall occur in the U.S.?

I know this is impossible to predict right now but I just want everyone's opinion and gut feelings about this. I think it will happen in the next 2 weeks and most of you already know where I think the first U.S. landfall will be :wink:

My guess is it will happen in mid-October, somewhere in Florida, and coming from the western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. If I have to pick a name, I'm going with Matthew...just something about that one.

The reason? Some people, including me, continue to compare this season to 1998 and 2005. If we are to have one major thing in common with those two, it's a biggie in October along a path similar to Mitch and Wilma.

I'm more interested in when is the first monster going to hit the USA?, since we've already had a couple of landfalls...

I suspect no major hurricanes will impact the U.S. this year.

you guys really dont think that a major hurricane will hit the U.S. this year? we still have 2 months left and i really think there will be AT LEAST one.

You might be right Brent. Perhaps 2010 will be known for the year of weak landfalling storms and recurves......I mentioned that about a month ago, and until I see an indication that conditions are going to change, I'm sticking with that opinion.

My proposed storm might not quite be a "major" at landfall (meaning C3 or higher), but I do expect a hurricane to strike along what I said in my previous post. Also remember, it might not matter if it's a major or not if it hits a major city.

thats true andrew. its all about if it hits in a more populated area. just look at hermine for example, wasnt that strong of a storm but caused disastrous flooding all across texas and oklahoma, including the metro areas of san antonio, austin, and dallas.

Major hurricane (category 3 or greater) will not strike the U.S. mainland in 2010. Could see a late-season storm impact Florida, but it won't be a major.

When it's all said and done, the season's most intense storms will be Danielle, Earl, and Igor.

BTW, is Wilma the last major (cat 3 or higher) to make U.S. landfall? Ike was a category 2 when it struck upper TX coast.

yeah wilma was the last major to hit the u.s. its been a while (almost 5 years)...but im thinking that luck will come to an end in the next month. jmo.

I'm going to go with the second week of October in 2010. Maybe a track similar to 1950's Hurricane King which hit Miami.

Well, there was Bonnie...technically it was a TS at landfall.

I think that based on the pattern we have now, there probably will not be anything for another couple of weeks...the pattern of recurves and Mexican landfalls will probably continue for the forseeable future. The best time for a hurricane threat will probably be October (likely early when conditions are more favorable) along the Gulf Coast, as steering currents will allow something in the Caribbean to drive northward. The question is whether we will have a spurt of tropical activity like there is now, and something will form that could ultimately threaten the US.

No "Major" landfall for US in 2010. Nothing can make it across the Atlantic from the east and typically there is strong high pressure w/ La Nina and that will keep most late season systems moving west in the Western Caribbean.
