Floyd and Gert in 1999? That is the last time I can remember.

This would also be historic as the easternmost Cat 4 ever in the satellite era if she gets there.

This was about the last thing I expected, 110 knots for Hurricane Julia...heck I was surprised it became a hurricane this morning! :double: It does seem like the tropics are going into turbo-drive within the last 18 hours with all three tropical cyclones.

Wow...ok when on earth did this happen!

Julia becoming a 3/4 was totally unexpected, I'm not sure any models went that strong!

I can't understand how has JULIA gained a category three intensity, if the updated shear map of CIMSS is showing 30 KT over JULIA  Can anyone explain it?

Julia has taken over Fred's record as the strongest hurricane south of 30°N and east of 35°W. Fred had winds of 120 mph at 32.1°W, Julia has winds of 135 mph at 31.8°W. OWNED!!!

Good question. When was the last time we had 2 category 4 hurricanes in the Atlantic at the same time?

I checked 1999 but Floyd and Gert weren't category 4 hurricanes at the same time by a matter of hours.

Early morning September 15: 12-hour forecasts indicate a maximum intensity of 120 knots for Julia and 130 knots for Igor. Two coincident Category 4 hurricanes have not occurred since 1950. The only occurrence since 1900 happened on September 15, 1926 at 06Z with Hurricane 4 [115 knots] and the Great Miami Hurricane [120 knots].

It doesn't look like a cat-4 right now though to be honest on the Vis imagery, I wonder whether this will be a quick up and quick down type system, clearly Julia has walked a tightrope because unfavourable conditions are close but Julia managed to find very favourable conditions much like Charley did in 2004.

Amazing to think yet another major has become a category-4 hurricane!!

What is it with this year and category-4 hurricanes!

This year is already 1 category 4 hurricane away from 2005's number of category 4 hurricanes...the record is 6 I believe (probably the only record 2005 didn't break lol).

This shows how favorable are the conditions in the Atlantic this year that after a slow start, has turned very active and what the seasonal forecasts by the experts were looking shaky even by mid August, after that, they have to have smiles as they see all of this unfold.Another thing is the word hyperactive was used by them to describe what this season would be, and it looks like 2010 will get to that as the ACE units the Atlantic is getting (89.49 at 900z) are getting closer and closer to that threshold (150+)

Looking like this year will be hyperactive in just about every sense of the word Cycloneye not just with regards to ACE but maybe all of the main facets that make a season like that...interesting to note all the hurricanes bar Alex been monster major hurricanes, heck even Alex probably would have been in most situations with its pressure.

IMO Julia may have peaked though recently, will have to wait and see, amazingly far east to be a cat-4, a new record for the 2010 season!
