Well, I must admit that up to this point, the local met office’s forecast has turned out to be more accurate than mine because since that heavy shower this morning (which did cause some flooding, BTW — nothing serious though) we haven’t had much precipitation in the southwest of the island. I think other parts may have had more but I can’t confirm that.

I’ll keep you guys posted.

Yes,the tail reaches us. But as Igor moves more north, the tail will weaken with time.

Hi folks, I was just off-island for the weekend. The waters were really bad in the Gulf of Paria thru most of the weekend. Yesterday morning the storm clouds started rolling across NW Trinidad. The waters started churning again, and it was quite a display. My brother called about 2pm to say that he had seen the worst flooding ever in our valley. The Diego Martin river had overflowed its banks along almost 2/3 of its length through the valley. This spans quite a few miles till it reaches the sea. The good thing is that the overflow mostly affected the highway which runs along the river, so that area was impassable. The bad thing is that most homes and residential roads are built near the water's edge, so if retaining walls broke, there was major flooding for those families. For others, the waters climbed onto the streets and overrun into folks' yards and homes. My yard got a little water, but some of my neighbours were flooded out.
Also, in another nearby valley (Belmont) numerous families lost their roofs and trees were uprooted. Amateur video showed what appears to be the start of a funnel cloud, but our Met office has denied that a tornado touched down.
With all that instability overhead, and the very warm waters abounding, I'm prepared for anything to happen with the pouch that's passing through. Keep safe everybody!

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
311 PM AST MON SEP 20 2010

.SYNOPSIS...LARGE SURGE OF ITCZ MOISTURE DRAWN NORTHWARD ACROSS THE
SOUTHERN CARIBBEAN WATERS IN THE PREVAILING SOUTHERLY FLOW WILL
CONTINUE TO AFFECT THE LOCAL AREA AT LEAST UNTIL LATER TONIGHT. THIS
WILL MAINTAIN A FAIRLY MOIST AIR MASS ACROSS THE REGION AT LEAST
THROUGH TUESDAY. LATEST SATELLITE IMAGERY AS WELL AS THE THE FAA
TERMINAL DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR SHOWED AREAS OF SHOWERS AND ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING ACROSS THE CARIBBEAN WATERS AND MOVING
ONSHORE ACROSS THE WEST AND SOUTHERN SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO. IN
ADDITION...DIURNAL AND LOCAL TERRAIN INDUCED SHOWERS AND ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS ALSO CONTINUED TO DEVELOP ACROSS PARTS OF THE INTERIOR
AND NORTHERN SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO. THIS RESULTED IN PERIODS OF
MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINFALL WITH TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS IN AREAS ALONG
THE NORTH SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO.

FURTHER EAST ...AN INDUCED LOW LEVEL TROUGH/EASTERLY WAVE WAS SLOWLY
APPROACHING THE LESSER ANTILLES AND WILL ENTER THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN
ON TUESDAY MORNING. IT IS EXPECTED TO MOVE MOVE MAINLY SOUTH OF THE
LOCAL AREA THROUGH WEDNESDAY. THIS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A RETURN OF A
MORE EAST TO NORTHEAST WIND FLOW AND FAIRLY DRIER AIR MASS OVER THE
REGION...WITH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES TO DECREASE ACROSS THE
REGION TO LESS THAN 1.70 INCHES ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.

AS FOR THE MARINE CONDITIONS... DATA OBTAINED FROM THE BUOYS TO OUR
NORTH AS WELL AS SEVERAL SPOTTER REPORTS AND INFORMATION RECEIVED
FROM LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGERS...CONFIRMED THAT LARGE BREAKING WAVES
AND ROUGH SURF CONDITIONS CONTINUED ALONG THE NORTH FACING
COASTLINES. THEREFORE...THE HIGH SURF ADVISORY WAS EXTENDED FOR THE
NORTHERN EXPOSED COASTLINES OF PUERTO RICO...CULEBRA AND THE NORTHERN
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS THROUGH 8 PM AST THIS EVENING.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
EXPECT AFTERNOON CONVECTION ACROSS THE ISLANDS TO GRADUALLY TAPER
OFF DURING THE EARLY EVENING HOURS...LEAVING PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES AND
LITTLE OR NO PRECIPITATION OVER LAND. HOWEVER LATE NIGHT AND EARLY
MORNING PASSING SHOWERS WILL AFFECT PARTS OF THE EAST AND SOUTHEAST
COASTAL AREAS OF PUERTO RICO AS WELL AS SOME OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS
BUT NO SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL IS HOWEVER EXPECTED.

LATEST GFS MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS THAT THE ELONGATED TONGUE OF
TROPICAL MOISTURE NOW SPREAD ACROSS NORTHEAST CARIBBEAN WILL CONTINUE
TO LIFT WEST NORTHWEST OF THE AREA BY TUESDAY MORNING. THIS WILL BE
FOLLOWED BY A RETURN TO MORE OF A TYPICAL EASTERLY TRADE WIND FLOW
WHICH IS EXPECTED BY TUESDAY AFTERNOON. THEREFORE...WITH DECREASING
MOISTURE...EXPECT DAYTIME CONVECTION ACROSS THE ISLANDS TO BE MAINLY
LOCALLY AND DIURNALLY DRIVEN. SOMEWHAT DRIER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED
ON WEDNESDAY...BUT BY LATE THURSDAY AND INTO FRIDAY...EXPECT A TUTT
INDUCED MOISTURE SURGE TO MOVE ACROSS THE REGION. THIS ALONG WITH
THE PRESENCE OF A TUTT LOW...EXPECTED TO SHIFT WEST ACROSS THE LOCAL
ISLANDS FROM THE TROPICAL ATLANTIC LATE THURSDAY...WILL INCREASE THE
CHANCES FOR ENHANCED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORM ACROSS THE ISLANDS
ONCE AGAIN...ESPECIALLY DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS.

&&

.AVIATION...PREVAILING VFR CONDS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE VI...TNCM
AND TKPK THROUGH 21/00Z...WITH BRIEF MVFR CONDS POSSIBLE IN A
PASSING SHRA. ACROSS PR...EXPECT SCT-BKN CLD DECK OF 3-5KFT WITH
SCT-NUMEROUS SHRA`S AND TSRA`S THROUGH AT LEAST 21/00Z...WITH
TEMPORARY MVFR CONDS POSSIBLE ACROSS ALL THE PR TAF SITES...AS WELL
AS BRIEF IFR CONDS IN A PASSING +SHRA OR +TSRA THROUGH 20/23Z AT
TJSJ. IMPROVING CONDS EXPECTED AFT 21/00Z...WITH PREVAILING VFR
CONDS EXPECTED THEREAFTER AT ALL TAF SITES THROUGH AT LEAST 21/14Z.

Gusty, can you post a news report verifying the fisherman lost? He seems to have been forgotten by the english media, at least. :D

Yesterday was a relief to see Igor's winds continue to drop. As bad as it was, I really feel that Bermuda could have had much worse, if earlier forecasts of a cat 3 dead on had proved to be true. So happy for them that it's over now and weather will begin to improve!

Lots of nasty tstorms in east Caribbean yesterday, some with 50,000 tops. My computer, battery, tv, etc. was unplugged for several hours. Some hastily-composed loops of radar and satellite yesterday:

Hi Bivgal :) don't worry i'm here but glad to see that your wink. Concerning the fisherman this info was revealed from our local newspaper "France-Antilles". Here is the link in our newspaper: http://www.guadeloupe.franceantilles.fr ... -94249.php
I don't have the link to translate this article in english, ask Abajan he should have the link :)
Off topic, very strong showers in Guadeloupe the last 3 hours! A pretty strong episode near of showers near 4PM has brang numerous localized flooding. Looks like another round of strong showers could impact the Windwards and Leewards islands tonight. Martinica has requiered an yellow alert due to strong showers and tstorms. Stay tuned and vigilant as usual.
I will keep you informed as possible :)

Looks like the ITCZ is pulling northward bringing a hot and moist air. This favors numerous cells of moderate to strong tstorms to developp. Let's be vigilant and on our guard.

hey firebird, this heavy rainfall Sunday early afternoon co-incided with the high tide which was at 2:20pm, so this could have def. contributed to the backing up of that river. Along of course with the intense afternoon heavy thunderstorm.

Since midnight, Rockley S Barbados saw 26mm, and Lodge Hill ( on the south west coast near to Paradise Beach) saw 37mm.

 Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Looks like our met office is right on the money though. Did you see that incredible lightning last night? When I was going to hit the sack, it was flashing. So I turned off and unplugged the computer, TV and MCTV (cable) box. When I awoke around 4:30, lo and behold, it was still flashing! (Although I imagine it must have eased off at some point during the night.)

Gusty, Frengly.com made a mess of translating that French:

Swept out to sea by currents, the lifeless body of that man had finally been solved in the early evening, thanks to the huge rescue vehicles triggered
