2010 retired hurricanes

#1 Postby smithandrewskij978 » Tue Sep 21, 2010 7:52 pm

I am just wondering, which hurricane names do you think will be retired from the 2010 hurricane season?

Agatha and Alex for sure, leaning yes towards Karl too.

How about these replacement names:

Agatha - Annette
Alex - Amos
Karl - Kerwin

Igor MIGHT have a shot depending on how much damage he does to Newfoundland. I doubt Hermine gets retired, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah I agree with the names mentiones in the posts above.

Agatha, Alex, Karl and possibly Igor. Other names may be added to the list as the season ends in more than 2 months.

Alex and Karl are great candidates ($1+ billion in damage) each.

Agatha very likely because of the death toll.

Earl and Hermine each caused around $150 million, unlikely to be retired.

Unsure on Igor because we don't know the exact amount of damage that it caused in Canada.

And for a touch of humor, I know Bonnie won't be retired either!! lol

Of course that goes without saying, but if Wikipedia is correct, Agatha too caused over $1 billion in US dollars. To put it bluntly, Agatha was Guatemala's Allison.

Ladies and Gentleman of the NHC. ( especially Avilla!)I would like to nominate Hurricane Julia for an early retirement.

She didn't hurt anybody. Showed her strength and even bothered, weakened her big brother Igor at a time he was trying to bully Bermuda.

I know there isn't a category called cutest storms. But couldn't you invent it?

Her charm and beauty deserves a unique place in history.

Typically whatever language the storm name was will be the replacement name. It just so happens the three candidates are all of English origin. Therefore, I believe Alex will be replaced with Adam, Karl with Kip, and Agatha with Alana.

Names are not automatically retired because they are associated with a great loss in life or property. A country which has been affected by the storm must request that the name be retired. I know there have been storms which caused extensive damage and loss of life in Haiti which have not had their names retired because the Haitians never requested it. So whether or not Agatha is retired depends on whether or not the powers that be in Guatemala pay enough attention to the names of tropical storms to make the request.

It’s also not true that names are generally replaced by others from the same language. You only have to look at 2008, the last year names were replaced, to see that. We had Gustav (Germanic), Ike (English), and Paloma (Spanish) replaced by Gonzalo (Spanish), Isaias (Spanish), and Paulette (originally French, now also commonly used in English speaking countries.) When a country asks for a name to be replaced, it provides a short list of possible replacements and one of them is picked. Cuba was the first country to ask that Gustav and Ike be replaced, and they provided “Spanish” replacements. The Cayman Islands asked that Paloma be replaced, and Paulette is a well-known name in the Caymans.

The idea that names have to be replaced by something from the same language was reinforced when Joaquin replaced Juan. When the Canadians asked that Juan be replaced, they provided a list of Spanish names as replacements. But this seems to have been an example of Canadian over-politeness. There was nothing that would have prevented the Canadians from providing English or French replacements for Juan.

If Agatha is replaced, it will probably be with an “A” name which is familiar to Guatemalans. I don’t have information about Guatemala specifically, but Alondra, Angela, Alejandra, Araceli, Astrid, and Aurora would be some names many in Latin America would be familiar with.

If Alex is replaced, it would be with a name well-known to Mexicans. Agustin, Alexis, Alfonso, Alonso, Alvaro, Angel, Antonio, Ariel, Armando, and Axel would be some male “A” names well-used in Latin America. Of course, it would confuse English speakers in the USA if the Mexicans suggested Alexis or Ariel as replacements, as both of those are now predominantly female names to “Anglos”, but they are still often given to boys in Latin America.

And yes, Astrid and Axel are now fairly common names in Latin America even though they were not “Spanish” by origin.

If Igor gets replaced, it would be either Bermuda or Canada that would ask for it. I would think that Ian would then be a great suggestion, as it’s definitely the most prominent male “I” name in those cultures which hasn’t yet been on the lists.

Karl would again be replaced by a name suggested by Mexico. “K” isn’t a letter that starts any traditional Spanish language names, so they would have to come up with something else. I would think Konrad would be a good replacement for another Germanic name. Kurt would work, but personally I think it’s too close in sound to Kirk, already on the 2012 list.

Arguing about the replacements is pointless since no one here has a vote in the WMO committee

Bonnie in 1998 had a similar damage bill to Lili of 2002 and Lili was the one who was retired

will the fact Karl had a low death toll cause him not to be retired?

:uarrow: Depends on Mexico. Paloma in 2008 had 1 or no deaths and was retired.

I don't see why it's any more "pointless" to speculate about what names might be replaced than it's "pointless" to speculate on why a particular feature has or has not been declared an Invest. I don't think people on this board have votes on that, either. :D

Just when I think of Mexico.... we had Hurricane Emily make landfall as a category 4 and a category 3 on Yucutan and the Gulf Coast and was not retired.

Alex finally gets to join his dad Andrew and his grandad Allen. But yeah, I think Alex, Karl, and Agatha are the main 3, here.

I'm guessing
Alex - Anthony or Adam
Karl - Kurt, Kirby, Kelvin (but Kevin is a name in the EPAC) or Kieran (as in Kieran Culkin)
Agatha - Ariel or Ashlyn

Also, has there ever been a name recycled as many times as the A name in list 2 (this list)? Allen, Andrew, and now potentially Alex. I can think or several who've been retired twice (Marilyn - Michelle), but none 3 times off the top of my head.

Some names for some of the storms I can think of:

Alex: How likely does "Aurelio" sound?
Karl: Kurt.
Agatha: Astrid.
(Frank: Fernando)

Also, this would be the first triple-retirement since male-female names lists were introduced. The first double-retirement I can think of was when Donna was retired and replaced with Dora.
