There is still evidently a vigorous and distinct (i.e., apart from the monsoon's) circulation associated with Matthew, with banding in the BoC and streamers flowing onshore to the south off the Pacific.

IMO, it could sit over the Isthmus of Tehuantepec with warm water on both sides for days and persist in this state.

In the latest imagery, there appears to be a hint that the storm is beginning to lift ever so slightly north, heralding (I think) an ENE move back across the Yucatan.

Convection in both the BOC and western caribbean. Heavy T storms moving off Cozumel this morning. We are still just past the peak of the season so its blob watching time.

If it weren't for the developing system further east it'd probably have half a chance but as Wxman57 noted the Monsoonal gyre is gonna eventually take the remains back into the Caribbean where models are at least hinting at something.

yeah, I just heard there was a mud slide that covered over 300 homes.
There have been more than a dozen deaths before this according to TWC.

Since this is still from Matthew, Macrocane, let's go on ahead and put the reports there as the thread is still up.

Could this be enough to retire the name Matthew? I know that now it's not a tropical cyclone anymore but the rains are directly related to its remnants so I if it was my decision I would retire it. Hopefully there are many survivors

As others have commented, it isn't always the major storms that cause the most destruction. Heavy rains from Mathew have added to what has already been a heavy rainy season for many in the region. Possibly hundreds killed now in Mexico, following loss of life in Guatemala. Tremendous damage to crops, hundreds of homes destroyed, roads and bridges washed away, the impact of Mathew is a huge economic and social burden for CA. For those amateurs of us who come to S2K for news, information and advice we are often as concerned with Tropical Depressions that wreak havoc through rain as we are with more developed TS and Hurricanes. They are all storms to us!! Cuba is about to receive heavy rains via TD16, let us hope they and Florida do not suffer the same level of damage and in particular, loss of life.

I agree with other posters, maybe it is time to retire this name.

I'm not sure that Matthew will be retired; I know Allison was the only TS to ever have been retired so it is rare for tropical storms to be retired

That might be true, but you can't really overlook 216 deaths (with 1000 more feared dead as well).
