Could Otto be retired?

#1 Postby Ad Novoxium » Fri Oct 15, 2010 5:34 pm

I was going through several reports on the damage on the islands hit by Otto, and I kept getting amazed at the photos and rainfall, and I'm really wondering: could the islands (especially the British Virgin Islands) request Otto's retirement? I wanted to hear some other opinions on it.

Not a chance, if we retired names based on rainfall we wouldn't have any names left.

No. Otto didn't cause enough damage to warrant retirement. According to Wikipedia, Otto caused an estimated $58 Million in damage.

Otto caused about 5 billion fewer dollars in damage. Allison caused 5 billion dollars in damage.

I have no idea if Otto will be retired, but there is no automatic dollar amount in damages that leads or does not lead to retirement. Hurrican Klaus in 1990 probably caused less than the dollar amount of damage Otto did, but its name was retired because the government of Martinique requested it because of the damage to that particular island.

If the government of the British Virgin Islands or another small island nation damaged by Otto requests that the name be retired, it probably will be, no matter what the total dollar damages are. It's the psychological impact of a storm on the citizens of a particular nation that would lead them to asked for its retirement, not some arbitrary figure in terms of dollars or deaths.

There are 3 names I think should be retired:

Alex (Mexico)
Igor (Newfoundland)
Karl (Mexico)

Lets break it down.Well we know which storms will NOT be retired...
Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, Fiona, Gaston, Julia, Lisa, and Nicole

Storms that have a 50/50 (or some chance at all) at being retired...
Hermine, Matthew, Otto, and Paula

Storms that have a good chance at retirement...
Alex, Earl, Igor, and Karl

Just my opinion of course.

I agree with this completely

Igor was so much worse than Juan from reports I have heard

Alex was deadly

Karl was economically devastating
