Category 4 tropical Cyclone Giri made landfall in western Burma's Rakhine state on Friday 22 October. Christian Aid and its partners in Burma are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to mount a response if it is needed.

Hurricane strength winds of up to 100 mph have affected thousands of people in Kyakpyu and nearby islands. Wind speeds of up to 50 mph have been reported around the city of Sittwe.

Authorities and non-governmental organisations are trying to establish the numbers of people affected but at least 1.4 million are located within the cyclone's path, with 24,000 people living less than five metres above sea level.

It has been reported that the Burmese regime has set up several rescue camps.

State radio and television announcements warned communities of the impending storm in the 24 hours before the cyclone hit.

After the devastation caused by cyclone Nargis in 2008, households were reportedly nervous as the cyclone approached, but were better prepared to move to safety than in the past.

Christian Aid partners in Burma have asked supporters to keep the people affected by Cyclone Giri in Rakhine state in their thoughts and prayers.

I'm not sure how low IMD went but I read 922mb.

At 23:30 PM IST, Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Giri over coastal areas of Myanmar further moved northwards and lays centered at 20.5N 93.5E, about 80 km northeast of Sittwe (Myanmar) and 120 km north-northwest of Kyaukpyu (Myanmar).

3 minute sustained winds near the center is 70 knots with gusts of 80 knots. The central pressure of the system is 970 hPa. The state of the sea is phenomenal.

Satellite imagery indicates broken to solid intense to very intense convection over area between 18.0N to 22.0N and from 91.5E to 95.0E. The lowest cloud top temperature due to convection is around -70C

The current environmental conditions and numerical weather prediction models suggest that the system would move northeastwards and weaken rapidly during next 24 hrs.

from the advisories estimated winds was 90 knots with a central pressure of 950 hPa

Yes min pressure was 950hPa. Not actually sure what the max winds were though as the kts figure doesn't match the km/h figures (180-190km/h, which is where I got the 100kts figure I quoted earlier) given. The ICAO warning would usually be able to confirm this but they haven't issued anything under the usual header for this basin.

Cyclone Death Toll Increases to 84

The death toll in Burma from Cyclone Giri, which hit the country's west coast last Friday, has climbed to at least 84, according to local residents.

Forty-eight bodies were found on Monday in Arakan State's Myebon Township, which was badly hit by the cyclone, local residents said. A further 10 bodies were found in Pauktaw Township in the same state.

Burma's state-run TV made its first mention of casualties on Monday, saying at least 27 people had died and 15 were missing.

The category four cyclone triggered a seven meter tidal surge and heavy rains, damaging roads, bridges, power and telephone lines.

The state-media said the number of deaths would have been higher if the government had not issued early warnings and evacuated people to safer areas.

However, non-governmental organization (NGO) relief workers in Rangoon say it remains difficult to assess the scale of the casualties and destruction on small islands off the Arakan coast.

“I think the death toll could easily increase to 100,” said a leading member of a local NGO which has sent rescue teams to the affected areas.

According to Rangoon sources, the government has only allowed local staff of international NGOs in Rangoon to visit the affected areas, while foreigners working for those NGOs are restricted to Sittwe, Arakan's state capital.
