Dean was a cat 5 storm that cause tremendous damage thru-out the Carribean. Thats why it was retired.

I don't think the category plays a big role in the retirement of a name, but certainly the most countries affected means a higher probability of retirement, anyway Karl has caused more damage than other storms like Isidore for example.

I know many will disagree, but I think Igor should be retired due to the amount of damage he caused in Newfoundland. Igor's been described as the worst hurricane in memory to hit Newfoundland.

No, that can't be "the rule" because it certainly didn't operate for the names replaced after 2008. See my post on the first page of this thread.

Plus Isidore is the French and English form of that name. The Spanish forms are Isidoro and Isidro.

The name Isaias was chosen because we're running out of male I names. The get continually more obscure.

Alex, Karl, and Matthew all have firm cases for retirement, and I would be surprised to see any of these 3 on the 2016 naming list.

I'd be somewhat surprisied if Matthew gets retired, Alex has a decent shot and Karl will have a 85-90% chance of being retired given the damage its done to several countries throuhout Central America.

Alex and Karl are 99% likely to be retired, as they are both by far the worst cyclones to affect Mexico since Wilma. Both were way worse in terms of damage than cat. 5 Dean... that should tell you something.

Matthew will probably stay on the list, as it was nowhere as awful as Stan in terms of life loss and most people in CA will think of Agatha and Karl when they think of this year's floods anyway.

I still think there's be another late retired name a la Wilma/Noel/Paloma.

Alex (Mexico), Igor (Newfoundland), Karl (Mexico), Matthew (Central America and Mexico), and Tomas (Lesser Antilles and Haiti) seem to be the ones most likely to go from the Atlantic (tying the 2005 record) while Agatha (and to a much lesser degree Frank) seem likely in the EPac (if Frank is retired with Agatha, then 2010 will be the year with the most retired EPac proper names).

As for Igor's name replacement should it go, I'm wondering if the Hebrew meaning of the Russian name Ilya may block it, because that's my personal favorite replacement.
