How many storms do you think will form in November/December

#1 Postby snowcane180 » Sun Oct 31, 2010 5:09 pm

I think due to the strength of this powerful la nina and that during la nina years you tend to see activity in the December, We could have at least 2 more storms in november and 2 in december giving us 24.14.8

At least another storm or 2 certainly seems possible....with the idea that one of them maybe a subtropical-type system out in the middle of nowhere in the atlantic...only a threat to shipping lanes. I am not going to rule out that we see one or 2 more systems developing in the caribbean given the sst at record levels and the la nina pattern.

Only 2 names left on the list of 2010 storm names...Virginie and Walter. I would put the odds at 50/50 that we may see an Alpha this season.

I'm going to be conservative and say that only 1 in november or december although 2 is a strong possibility.

I'm going conservative and bet that Tomas is the last fully named system. There could be one or two close calls...

I think that we may get 1 fully tropical system mid-November. Perhaps a sub-tropical system in the central Atlantic sometime in late November or early December.

Also, I have a question. If a storm using a greek-letter did serious damage and the affected people asked for it to be retired, how would it be replaced? Don't know if there is any official way of doing this.

I found this little bit from reading Wikipedia.

Significant tropical cyclones have their names retired from the lists with a replacement name selected at the next World Meteorological Organization Regional Association IV Hurricane Committee meeting. If all of the names on a list are used, storms are named after the letters of the Greek alphabet (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc.). Greek names, unlike the names in the regular lists, cannot be retired. If a storm ever reached the magnitude that might otherwise have led to retirement, the storm would be listed with the retired names with a footnote indicating the Greek letter would still be available for future storms.

3 more, perhaps 1 subtropical storm in addition by mid-December bringing us to "Beta". If not, we'll probably get to Alpha in December. Walter could be something around Thanksgiving, maybe the last hurricane of the year in the Caribbean or SW Atlantic, the 13th cane. The Caribbean could give birth to one more storm, perhaps a monster by late November as none of the previous have fully taken advantage of the tremendous energy held within this part of the basin. I would not be surprised if this season had one more trick up its sleeve.

An interesting statistic here.... on average, a named storm forms in November in one out of every two years.

2007 - Hurricane Noel
2008 - Hurricane Paloma
2009 - Hurricane Ida
2010 - Hurricane Tomas

Not just four years in a row with a November tropical storm, but four years of November hurricanes in a row!

2 more to go - I think a tropical storm and a major hurricane.

My vote is zero more. I think we're done for 2010.

A December surprise would be fun, but I'm content to call it at Tomas.

I think we are done for the season. The fronts are making it all the way to the Caribbean and even though there is plenty of potential left in the Caribbean the shear that accompanies these fronts is going to keep development at bay imo.
