I will be very surprised if this doesn't turn into all out war. There is no telling how far NK will go once SK retaliates. And I think NK is stupid enough to take it further since we now have a carrier present in the area.

I think Kim really wants to fight in desperation. China's role is in question here. They could stop this and choose not so the next issue here is will they help NK. I would assume so because to sit back and watch NK get kicked does not sound reasonable for NK's best buddy. I think China's choice to play somewhat neutral to this point is a statement to NK in hopes they will backdown. The long term issue with this rogue state selling and developing nukes is something everyone can not ignore and should play into the descision on retaliation. If the USA is going to be part of any retaliation and it looks like they will I doubt it will be just a punch and run. That would be stupid imo.

If this turns into war, the economy of my hometown may collapse.

Re: North Korea launches artillery attack on South Korean island
This was no accident or not a planned attack by North Korea, because by the information at link,it was all planned as the leaders were at the site only a few hours before it started.

(Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and his son and successor Jong-un visited the artillery base from where shells were fired at a South Korean island just hours before the attack, South Korean media reported on Thursday.
North Korea's attack on Yeonpyeong Island that killed two South Korean marines and two civilians on Tuesday was probably ordered by Kim Jong-il himself, the Joongang Daily quoted a well-informed government source as saying.

Re: North Korea launches artillery attack on South Korean island
YEONPYEONG ISLAND, South Korea – Fresh artillery shots were heard Friday on the tense South Korean island of Yeonpyeong, three days after it was devastated by a North Korean attack and hours after Pyongyang warned that the peninsula was on the brink of war.

The best way to minimize civilian casualties might be to wait until North Korea puts on one of those massive military parades for which they’re so famous and then use some smart bombs to get rid of just the troops. Who knows, perhaps they’re planning one of those parades right now in celebration of their recent assault!
Unfortunately, someone there will probably read this post and take a rain check on that parade

I agree. NK isn't just looking for attention now, they're looking for a fight. I just hope that if it does escalate SK and the US takes them out. I'm tired of this crap.

Re: North Korea launches artillery attack on South Korean island
I think the next week will be crucial. The US and SK are getting ready to have some more military exercises in the area and there will be a strong US presence. I hope Kim Jong Il(or whatever his name is)isn't as stupid as I think he is. If he is it will get very nasty very fast and I would take bets that NK would use nukes immediately. NK has a well trained very large army, but I doubt that it would be much of a match for a combined US and SK retaliation. There is no doubt about it that if this does turn into war it is going to be very nasty very fast imo. Of course every war is very nasty, but I don't think I need to explain myself here.

Kim Jong Il and his fat faced son aren't stupid they are insane. The whole family has been whacked out since the first Kim Jung.

You will get no argument from me on that one!! They are probably too insane to be stupid which makes it even worse.

O CNN, you continue to make me laugh, ok so in the military we call these exercises well, exercises, they are for practice in case crazy up north goes crazier, usually take place far, far away from North Korea, and shoot I have participated in several in Busan, the southern most city of the Korean Peninsula. But the news loves to call it a "war game". Subtle differences like that make the whole public go nuts.

Shessh.. It seems like everyone want's the US to get involved in more wars.. We can hardly pay for the mess in Iraq and Afghanistan.. Seems like a plot to bankrupt the USA and it may work at that.. I don't see how we could possibly attack Iran or NK at this point. Diplomacy with these 2 countries is fruitless and always has been. Neither absolutely cannot be trusted and is going for nukes..no doubt in my mind. With nobody else stepping up to the plate it look's like terror is going to only grow. We need the people in these countries/religions who say they care to step up or we may have to go the cheap route with one button. Either way Americans will be forking money over to these people for years to come and we are hurting already. Were getting our ass kicked by the terrorists throughout the world..

How weather plays in to this, you can see the fog in the back ground of this video. And the horn going off, this causes some severe impacts to operations.
O and I can guarantee you, everyone on this boat does not want to go to war, they want to go and for christmas instead, I know the rest of the world is watching this, and a lot of people are saying the U.S should get involved, but for the people actually out here, we really hope it just calms down and ends peacefully.

NK has been playing this game for decades and is not about to stop now. It's called brinkmanship and they are experts at it. The one difference that I see this time is that the leaked cables reveal that China may be tired of this game. Their support is all that has kept the NK kooks in power. If they were to withdraw that support NK would collapse.

This is an interesting read
I have personal knowledge of the incident below. I was stationed on Guam at the time (home of the B-52's mentioned in the article) and we actually went to DEFON 2 over this incident. For those non-military, that's one step below actual war.

HOPEFULLY, China is finally tired of NK's games.
