Just bumping up my question regarding Miami vs the Keys for chance of warmer air and less wind in week of 12/26 and beyond? I'm thinking the farther south one drives the warmer? Of course the teens like the idea of South Beach and I have to make decisions yesterday. TIA. WLD.

too soon to tell at this point WLD but in general, you get alot of bang for your buck as you head down the peninsula this time of year. if it's cold there, it's really cold everywhere else.

830 est and dew points are incredibly low across Florida even all the way south to the southern tip of Florida - 30s for dew points.

Looking at the long-wave pattern, looks like a repeat in store for early next week, with possibly colder temps across Florida and another freeze, possibly worse.

The pattern is reminiscent to last year which I thought we would not see for another 30 years here in south Florida.

Should it freeze in west palm beach tonight it would be the earliest a freeze has been seen since 1958.

you're right gator, this sure does feel like last january with non stop arctic surges interrupted by brief warm ups. it looks like our moderating trend will peak this weekend with the next fropa on Sunday...identical to this weeks pattern. and next weeks dump could be even worse as there will be alot more snowpack to prevent moderation of the arctic airmass. i'm hoping for the best but it's getting to the point where i dread winter..even in florida. our water temps have already plunged to near critical levels and another arctic blast could initiate fish kills that we can ill afford after last year.

Tonight and tomorrow doesn't look as bad as last January here in Orlando, but next week if the euro is right could definitely be at least a rival.
Hopefully the euro model is wrong, would definitely hit the citrus industry really hard.

FireRat here in western Broward county, I just returned from a bicycle ride out in the vicinity of I-595 and I-75 with a thermometer where I've read temps between 41 and 44 degrees. Chilly alright.

Including that record low in Fort Lauderdale this morning, there were several others, including 31F at Vero Beach and 39F at Naples.

The coldest spots I saw in Florida this morning were at Panama Ctiy, Crestview and Tallahassee all at 25F. And Perry-Foley Airport, just SE of Tallahassee at 24F

As cold as it was, Tallahassee was well short of the record of 18F set on Dec 7 1937

I just saw this on the morning update....

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAMPA BAY RUSKIN FL
945 AM EST TUE DEC 7 2010

.UPDATE...WINDS WERE A BIT HIGHER THAN EXPECTED OVERNIGHT WHICH
CREATED SOME WIDESPREAD WIND CHILL ISSUES...BUT DID NOT ALLOW
TEMPERATURES TO FALL AS MUCH AS PREVIOUSLY EXPECTED. STILL...MOST
OF OUR INLAND LOCATIONS DROPPED TO NEAR FREEZING WITH THE LOWEST
TEMPERATURE OCCURRING IN HIGHLANDS COUNTY. ARCHBOLD DROPPED TO 18
DEGREES THIS MORNING WHICH ANNIHILATED THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 32
IN 1997
. MOST RECORDS FOR DECEMBER 7TH OCCURRED IN 1937 WHEN TAMPA
REACHED 28 DEGREES...FORT MYERS 36...SARASOTA/BRADENTON 30 AND ST
PETE 32. WE DID NOT REACH ANY OF THOSE 1937 RECORDS.

the atmosphere is decoupling nicely tonight under a much lighter wind regime. Brooksville is 27 at midnight , a full 11 degrees lower than this time last night.

Just checked my thermomter and currently at 2:00 a.m. The temperature stands at 26.7 degrees. Winds are now calm which should allow for the low temp to drop at least aother four or five more degrees by sunrise.

The temperature bottomed out at 24.2 degrees at my location in north Jax this morning, the coldest measured thus far in this early meteorological winter season. Temp currently 25.4 degrees at 7:15 a.m.

A new record low was established at the NWS office in Jax, located within 5 miles of my home. One of the local news stations here stated the NWS Jax office recorded 25 degrees as the official low temp. I will double check that a little later.

And possibly again. Around XMAS:
This system and its
associated cold front will transport another shot of modified Arctic
air into S fla with both the GFS and European model (ecmwf) timing the frontal
passage right around or just after sunset on Christmas day with
the cold air filtering in behind the front. Both models also show
the coldest air arriving beyond this forecast package but have had
consistency in their past few runs so all those interested should
keep informed with updated forecasts through the week.

Very much looking forward to the summery weather forecast through the next 7 days (and maybe beyond?). Morning lows of 66-67 are going to feel really nice.

That's the great thing about Florida....give us 3 Arctic intrusions in December, but the warm air is still never that far away.
