Re: SE TX/SW LA winter wx: Winter temps have returned!
Currently 34.5f at the house. Predicted low for tonight was 35f. How low will it go? Clear with little to no wind so looks like a good radiational cooling set up.
edit @12:15am-Now at 32f and continuing to fall. I won't be surprised to wake up to 27f or 28f in the am. Major temp bust if we do.

It didn't get nearly cold enough to even look for snow Tuesday night. All rain!
Tonight we have another freeze warning and it's been at or below freezing for quite a while already. Warmer winter? You could have fooled me. We've had a bunch of freezes already and it's not even technically winter yet.

Re: SE TX/SW LA winter wx: Winter temps have returned!
We had the heaviest frost of the season so far this morning with a low of 28 in NW Harris County. About 8 hour at or below freezing as well. Now we'll start the warming trend until Saturday afternoon when the next push of colder air arrives. If guidance is correct after the weekend front, a nice warming trend may be ahead for next week. We will see.

Managed a 27.8f low this am at the house. Plenty of frost around too. Almost above 32f now, but that means we've had another 8 hrs.+ of freezing temps. It seems to me we are having more and longer freezes earlier in the Winter than normal. I hope that we do get the Jan-Feb warm-up some are talking about. If we don't then

Re: SE TX/SW LA winter wx: Winter temps have returned!
29 was the official low in Lafayette, another very heavy frost this morning with a freezing fog advisory overnight. I can't remember us ever having 'freezing fog' here and it's been reported at the airport twice this week. At least 5 or 6 heavy frosts (4 official freezes) just in December alone and everything has quickly turned brown. I checked last winter seasons data and we are starting winter out MUCH colder than 2009. We know things will get warmer sometime next week but it will be interesting to see if we continue to get arctic intrusions.

We seem to be having more and slightly stronger arctic intrusions earlier this year. Like you said, I'm going to be interested to see if this continues or if we do get the expected warm up.

Use with extreme caution...

That seems to be a typical La Nina pattern - cold early then warm Jan/Feb.

I have been pretty lucky so far - I had a low of 31 but another heavy frost. So far just the bananas seem to be bearing the brunt.
I sure hope this winter pans-out according to the projections I've been reading thus far (cold December but warming-up afterwards).

It was interesting hearing one of the local mets. mention the microclimates in the area. I have had 4 mornings now in the upper 20's and ice on the grass, plants and Christmas decorations. Our house is on a Golf course and it cools off very quickly at night. My Hibuscus think one day they are in the tropics then another day in the arctic.

Yes, so true. I have noticed that the east side of IH-45 (Oak Ridge North, Imperial Oaks, etc.) is usually 3-5 degrees warmer than just across the freeway (The Woodlands, Shenandoah). My temps seem to mirror those of Bush-IAH while The Woodlands itself tends to be more comparable to D.W. Hooks.

I saw the 16 day forecast and notice that it may rain on December 20-21, the night of the total lunar eclipse. Last one until April 2014.

I wouldn't put much stock in such a long-range outlook. However, the total eclipse doesn't START until 1:40am. Peak eclipse is 2:20am. I'll be quite asleep that late.

Looks like we're once again getting a colder shot of air with this upcoming front. NWS Lake Charles mentions it will be the coldest since last January. Models are showing 24-25 Monday morning for the Lafayette area. A true hard freeze is upcoming.

I don't, but something to keep an eye on. By the way 1:40 AM is for Eastern Time. That would be 12:40 AM Central Time.

It's not every day you see single digit dewpoints around here! We busted big time on the hard freeze last night (only hit 30) but 23-25 looks attainable for tonight. We will see.

That graphic above is in Eastern Time. Mid eclipse is 2:41AM EST, that's 1:41AM CST.
