This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Storms that should have been retired.

#1 Postby HurricaneRyan » Mon Dec 27, 2010 3:18 pm

While 73 storms have been rightfully retired from 1954 - 2009, there are some storms that survived elimination but should have been retired.

Which storms that weren't retired do you think should have been retired?

I'll start off with a few that come to mind:

Tropical Storm Alberto (1994)
I don't see how a storm that caused at least $1 billion in flooding and damages could not get retired. If this had occurred after Allison, Alberto probably would have been retired. But for some reason, no one considered retiring Tropical Storms until they got a huge friggin' punch from Miss Allison, in the fact that she owned practically every friggin' state in the south with her rainfall. But Alberto caused a lot of damage too, not as much as Mean Girl Allison, but enough to where it could get retired.

Hurricane Gordon (1994)
Haiti is acting like the nerds in High School that everyone hates. They were pummeled by Gordon, with over 1,000 people killed. They could have stood up for themselves and demanded that Gordon get retired but NO, they are WIMPS, and they let this imbecil stay on the lists.

Tropical Storm Bret (1993)
211 deaths is a good reason for retirement...that's a lot of people who would be crying over loved ones they lost because of Bret. Why didn't anyone have the courage to speak up and get this name retired?

Tropical storm Claudette (1979)

This storm caused a lot of flood damage back then. How could this not get retired?

Hurricane Emily (2005)
Infamous girl you know! But she should have been retired.

Alirght , I'm doen for now. What would you have suggested?

Before I respond, I want to point out the four topics previously made on Storm2k.

http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=109012 - from August of this year
http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=103237 - from September 2008
http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=67888 - from July 2005

It's a very interesting discussion, one that is often debated. When a name is retired, it is almost honored and placed into the annals of history. Even Klaus, for all of its lackluster, is that much more important, despite so many other storms doing so much worse. Rather than listing my two cents, I'll summarize what was said in the previous four topics!

Hilda 55 (mentioned 04, 08, 10, was eventually retired) - killed over 300 in Mexico
Carrie 57 (mentioned 08) - 80 deaths from a shipwreck
Gracie 59 (mentioned 10) - might actually have been retired
Alma 66 (mentioned 04, 08, 10) - notable damage, unusually early major hurricane
Francelia 69 (mentioned 04, 08, 10) - more than 100 people died in Central America
Dorothy 71 (mentioned 08) - 51 deaths in Lesser Antilles
Edith 71 (mentioned 04, 10) - 37 deaths and $25.4 million period damage, Category 5 landfall in Central America
Belle 76 (mentioned 08) - 5 deaths and $100 million period damage
Claudette 79 (mentioned 08, 10) - half-billion tropical storm, extensive flood damage
Beryl 82 (mentioned 08) - 115 deaths in Cape Verde (editor's note: death toll is disputed, 3 deaths per http://pdf.usaid.gov/pdf_docs/PNABP986.pdf)
Klaus 84 (mentioned 08) - 2 deaths, but $152 million period damage
Isabel 85 (mentioned 10, was eventually retired) - very damaging flooding in Puerto Rico before it developed into a tropical cyclone
Juan 85 (mentioned 04, 05, 08, 10, was eventually retired) - caused $1.5 billion in damage in Louisiana and 24 deaths
Kate 85 (mentioned 04, 08, 10) - damaging hurricane and a record setting major hurricane in late November that hit Florida
Allison 89 (mentioned 08, was eventually retired) - 11 deaths and $560 million period damage
Chantal 89 (mentioned 08) - 13 deaths and $100 million period damage
Marco 90 (mentioned 05, 08) - Merged with Klaus to cause decent damage in southern US
Bret 93 (mentioned 08) - caused hundreds of deaths in Venezuela
Gert 93 (mentioned 08) - 76 deaths and $166 million period damage
Alberto 94 (mentioned 05, 08, 10) - caused $1 billion in damage and 30 deaths
Gordon 94 (mentioned 04, 05, 08, 10) - caused more than 1100 deaths in Haiti
Erin 95 (mentioned 08, 10) - $700M in damage in Florida
Bertha 96 (mentioned 08, 10) - damage was mixed in with and eclipsed by Fran's
Lili 96 (mentioned 05, 08, was later retired) - 10 deaths, but $660 million period damage in a wide swath of area
Danny 97 (mentioned 05) - 42 inches of rain in one spot, $100 million in damage
Bonnie 98 (mentioned 08, 10) - $1 billion in damage
Charley 98 (mentioned 05, was later retired) - $80 million in damage
Frances 08 (mentioned 08) - 2 total deaths, but $500 million period damage
Irene 99 (mentioned 10) - $1 billion in damage
Leslie 00 (mentioned 08) - precursor caused $950 million period damage
Gabrielle 01 (mentioned 08) - 3 total deaths, but $230 million period damage
Cindy 05 (mentioned 08) - 3 total deaths, but $320 million period damage
