Re: Texas Winter 2010-2011
Isn't there an outside possibility of frozen precip in your area the middle of next week? I don't claim to know as much about this as you all do but it seems when it get's really really cold there's never any moisture to work with or it can't reach the ground because the dewpoints are in the teens or lower. Never understood how it can snow and reach the ground in the northern states with such low dewpoints but it can't in the south.

I still think our best shot at a significant winter storm is in the 12th-14th time frame. Once this dense cold air gets established, there should be a battle zone (cold dense air at the surface vs. warm/moist air from the Pacific) setting up somewhere across the central or southern plains. Shortwave Energy coming from the Pacific should try lift warm/moist air over the top of this denser cold dome at the surface to produce precip. If this were to develop, the next questions would be 1) what type of precip. snow and/or ice 2) where does this battle zone set up ? As Ntxw mentioned earlier, this could be in between the first arctic intrusion and the second potentially much bigger Siberian intrusion at the end of next week. Or it could be a storm that erodes the cold air out entirely and we're left with a more zonal/milder flow in from the Pacific.
I guess we'll just have to sit back and enjoy this roller coaster ride until we have a much better idea towards this weekend.

Anyone seen temps over Russia lately?
Yep... Oymyakon is checking in with -71 F under cloudy skies..
There have been some dew point near -80 F in a few places recently..
And it is warming up from the past few days...
Yesterday it was -74 with a low of -77
That's cold for them...
Normal would be -45 to -50 or so..
And that air seems to be on the move.... With a huge warm up later in the week with temp rising into the -20's by next week..
Most of the time that means it's headed to Alaska and Canada..... When eastern russia warms up big time that means North America might be cooling way down..
I'd guess -70 to -80 in russia might translate to -55 to -60 in NE Alaska/NW Canada...??
Here is a link to Oymyakon... http://www.foreca.com/Russia/Oymyakon
And to hundreds of russian cities... http://www.foreca.com/Europe/Russia/browse

With the talk of the cold thats going on, I had one question, are lows in the 10's-20's unusual here? I moved from Alabam and that isnt really that unusual (atleast the 20's), usually occuring a few times each winter, even down to the gulf. This is an awsome forum to read by the way, keep up the good work!
Welcome aboard! Where in Texas are you located? The northern half has very similar temperature variations as north-central Alabama. Dallas and Birmingham would be good comparisons with teens and 20s not too unusual. While southern Texas is more reminiscent of Mobile or Montgomery depending on how deep into TX where 10s and 20s are very cold. Beyond that the Panhandle and south plains are much more like Denver.
Teens are very unusual here, but mid to upper 20s are quite common. I've already been in the 20s many times this winter.
Ok, just got home and need to catch up with what's going on. Peeked in this afternoon, but haven't seen much since this morning. Feels like hurricane season with the obsessive model watching. lol

It's quiet cause we're all watching the gfs coming out now. It's only at 66 hrs so far, though.

Re: Texas Winter 2010-2011
Hello
Getting ready for a great Texas Winter Weather week.
Looks like the week of the 17-21 will be interesting also.
Did anyone notice GFS run from 00Z last night /this morning. It showed lots of precip with very cold temperatures.
Anyway. I guess we will focus on this week for now
Anyway, hello again. I really enjoy reading this board and thought I would start taking part in it.
Thanks,
Brandon from Sherman TX (right on TX/Ok boarder about an hour north of DFW.

We'll see. This run coming out now doesn't have any snow for us on Sunday, but that doesn't mean it won't. Still time for things to change. We'll see what the Euro says.
Now it's time to watch what it shows for the cold next week.

You know what would be amazing? Since the models have been pushing back the timing of the weekend's system, what if they are having trouble initializing it (still moving west in the PAC) that it comes out so late it manages to phase with the incoming northern stream and arctic air, you'd have a perfect storm for OK and N Tx
