Re: Deep South Winterwx thread: January trouble
And along with the rain, our temperature has started dropping. At my house on the south side of Denham Springs, it was 40 when I left for church, 41 when I got home a little over an hour ago, and is now down to 38.

Cheers and looking forward to snow vs. ice!
Don't pay too much attention to the snow accumulation maps by the models, they have been doing a horrible job. In many areas that they show snow will most likely be sleet/freezing rain accumulations.

I am hoping for a miracle and it will mostly be snow, unfortunately, this looks like an extremely dangerous ice storm.
Ivan, I have a feeling you would really enjoy and ice storm. They were my favorite growing up and I haven't been one in ages. Something to behold. Just don't drive...and don't stand under pine trees!
It's all fun and games until the power goes out.
...and then it's still fun and games for me. I have a generator and enjoy power outages due to nasty weather. Unfortunately, the ice will stay to my north. I'll just have to hope for something later this month.

Ugh, work is forcing me to come in tonight.
Hopefully I can get off by 8-9pm before the worst comes in. This SUCKS.

Starting to sleet in Auburn. Very light so far, but the atmosphere is getting saturated enough to start hitting the ground.

Oh, I probably am.
It is sitting at 41 F here at my house with a good northeast wind. Bleh. This is very frustrating. The NOAA products show the "iceline" setting up right on the border of my county to the north. It's very unfortunate that from my house I can almost see the that border!!!! Lame.

Re:
SunnyThoughts wrote:So what does that mean for you guys farther north...if its actually sleeting close to the coast...does that mean better or worse for more snow than ice for you guys farther north?
From what I'm gathering, the boundary layer is pretty much the same here with mainly a big ice storm. It should start off as snow here, but quickly change over to freezing rain. Keep us updated with the wintry precip on the Gulf coast.

Re: Deep South Winterwx thread: January trouble
Thought I'd make a post for our friends to the southeast. It looks like the 850mb temps are going to be a bugger. I-20 and south looks predominantly ice (freezing rain/sleet) throughout the event including areas 50 or so miles either side of the interstate. Might have some snow mixed in but chances look low until you get to higher terrain in AL/GA. So if it isn't already snowing, probably won't see much of it throughout the system. Accidents reported in MS/AR/LA already. Stay safe!

This storm seems like it is going to bring a lot less QPF than I thought, to my area, atleast. There isn't a lot of rain left and it has hardly rained, just a light drizzle. Some models were forecasting 1-2" of rain. Not even close!
The temps have dropped though, was 44 at noon and is now down to 39.

If there is snow, it should be at the start. Snowing pretty nicely in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

You are going to have all snow this evening through tonight into tomorrow morning according to the latest GFS & NAM models as the heights start rising in your area you may go to sleet/freezing rain during the day tomorrow, so be careful when traveling around tomorrow afternoon.
Thank you!
