Bill.......I agree with the others that the landlord is trying to call your bluff and put the "fear" into you and yours.
We rented 13 different houses/apts in 30 years! (proffessional renters?!?) Finally, 6 yrs. ago, we purchased a home! I know each state has different laws governing YOUR rights......and the LANDLORDS'......but there ARE laws in place that are in your favor in this instance!
Several years ago, when my kids and I were renting a little home in the country, we noticed sewage coming up just a few feet from a window! After checking it out, we found out that the well was only 12 ft. from the sewer......also this same well serviced the landlords home down the hill! I was paying for all of the electricity that transported that water down the hill......she had 6 kids. The electricity for all of the outbuildings was ALSO on my bill!
After trying for a couple weeks to get her to clean up this situation.....and suffering thru tons of lies.....I met with a lawyer. Her advice was to STOP paying her rent, but put the rent amount into an escrow account at the bank. Also, I changed all of the locks. (This IS legal!) I finally went to the Health Dept. myself. Because of MY actions, we had 14 days to vacate.......it was 3 weeks before Christmas, and the weather was in the mid-teens.
We did move.....and it was really tough times, believe me......but I found out there are lots of things in place in favor of the RENTER if the living space is not kept in living condition by the landlord.
My prayers go out to you and yours......there's gotta be a reason for all of this happening to you.....you're a strong fella.......p

Perhaps, my friend, as Petal Pusher noted, a new path is opening for a reason. Each of the nearly 600 persons on Storm2k are challenged in different ways in life...as you often witness...and each of those challenges represent new opportunity.
I see the evolution of your challenge this time going from hopeless to helpless through a learning process that now finds you being proactive. The final leg of that journey may be to recognize this not as a negative at all, but the new opportunity it represents. Protect your rights; know your rights...and then challenge those who seem not to care about them.
Then....while doing that, look to this as a chance to expand your horizons once again. Undoubtedly you have met and talked with others along the way. Expand that network and grow the opportunity.
I've mentioned this before...but I hated being drafted and sent to Vietnam. I hated where I was, I was angry at my own country. I hated that I was the only teacher drafted into that war out of our county. I even hated the smell of Vietnam.
But in August of 1970...a miraculous thing happened. No, the war didn't change. In fact, the US commitment was less than ever before.
That miraculous thing that changed was my attitude. Instead of hating and cursing my situation, I woke up one day and decided to embrace it. I became a teacher at a local school. I polished those jungle boots and made SGT E-5 with only 13 months of service. I sought out a new role...reporting casualties in our entire battalion each day.
Most importantly, I turned my anger and frustration into a positive experience. It molded me into a better person; a stronger person.
And ever since I have found ways to find sunshine on rainy days.
Perhaps, my friend, it is an opportunity for you to do that to. Starting today.
It could happen.

Very good perspective Azskyman. Life is about the crosses the good Lord gives us to carry. There are some people that carry these crosses everyday and never get to shed the burden of them.
So are ones that we can do something about. Doors are opened and trust me doors are slammed shut. At this point is when you can't give in and let it get to you cause it will.
Take people's advice - do something that you won't ordinary do - push yourself and see what happens.
Like the old saying goes - 'if life hands you lemons - make lemonade".

UPDATE!
The attorney told us we won't HAVE to move until 30 SEPT; the landlord has to file a suit, and the Sheriff has to deliver a summons to us within that time, so we do have a little breathing space. He is aware that we have no intent to remain here, but if we have to stay, we will still have to pay rent for September, plus gather whatever $$$ we can to effect a move...IF we are approved for an apartment.
He is sending a letter to the landlord's legal counsel to that effect...we were also told that if the landlord tries to forcibly remove us, change the locks, etc., that WE can bring suit against them.
We are still trying to get out of here before 1 SEPT if we can, to avoid paying all that money...we have also engaged Terminix to examine and spray/etc. while we're here, and carry that contract over to the new apartment when we move, to completely eradicate any future infestations.
Howzat for "pro-active"?

NOW, we received a letter from Legal Aid (too late to call them until Monday) stating that they have assigned us an attorney (!)...we are to contact him and "lay it out" in toto, but obviously there's something terribly WRONG with Collins' handling of us. More as it develops, ladies and gents.

Bill...so good to hear some positive vibes coming thru in your posts! Please know that none of us mean to diminish the seriousness of the situation you find yourself in.....and you sure have the support of each one of us! A friend just sent this to me.....thought I'd share it......p
If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.
Happy moments, praise God.
Difficult moments, seek God.
Quiet moments, worship God.
Painful moments, trust God.
Every moment, thank God.

Petal Pusher, thanks for sharing that one. I just love it. And it applies perfectly to Bill's situation.

We do feel a renewed sense of hope, petal*pusher...but, as Debi just said a few minutes ago, this is going to be a LONG weekend...until we get a "yea" or "nay" from the owner of the apartment we want.
MORE GOOD NEWS!!! Debi's mother, somehow, got together an additional $450...which places us, aaccording to my dubious calculations, about $185 short of "goal"...a LOT closer than I ever expected!
Going over to Modest Needs. Org to revise my estimate there...
