That event is already having an impact on the AO ensemble data. They are suggesting a return to a strongly -AO near the 1st of February, +/- a couple of days.

I had already been forecasting here in Houston for 13 years back then. I remember when the model forecasts came out a couple of days before the event (we didn't have 16 day models then, just 1 model out to 48hrs). We looked at the "hurricane" in the Gulf that was forecast and looked at each other and asked "could this really happen?" It did. A "West Gulf Low" developed south of the LA coast. The low had sustained winds of 40-50 kts with gusts to hurricane force. Seas 30-40 feet. To its east was a squall line that produced 100+ mph winds across the eastern Gulf and into the Florida peninsula. To its north was snow - heavy snow along the Gulf Coast, particularly along the FL panhandle. Heavy snow in the TN Valley. Then it moved up the East Coast and wreaked havoc there.

Now I'm not saying we're looking at such an event across the Gulf this time, but we could see a low develop in the Gulf that could bring snow down to the coast, and likely another big storm for the East Coast.

This is only a possibility at this time - it's not my forecast yet.

I was attending LSU, but back home on the westbank of New Orleans when that storm formed. We had torrential rains, with lots of wind and if you didn't know better, you'd swear there was a tropical system just offshore. Later it transitioned to snow, but we didn't get any accumulation. The ground was too soaked I guess and it just melted.

Not quite Metalicwx220 ... that would be 15 inches for rural Texas (Edwards, Val Verde and Terrell counties), just to the north-northwest of Del Rio. Sanderson, Texas, would be close to that amount.

12z GFS is still persistent on a Texas storm  once again around 228-240ish. Maybe, just maybe the GFS is on to something. History has said that if the GFS grabs something for at least 4+ days of runs around 200 hours, it stands a chance. Hence our little snowstorm earlier this month.

Yes, 12Z GFS still shows a snow event across Texas at the beginning of February:

A few runs lately (including today's Canadian at 180hrs) has shown energy left behind this week in the baja. I would be much more confident of an early Feb storm should that energy get itself together there vs a storm coming from the NW flow.

I'd believe that only after it happened lol. To the north in San Angelo our 24 hour snowfall record is 7.4"

I know soon the models will back off this event just because they always do, but I pray they bring it back.

Oh the Superstorm, I lived in the mountains of SE TN just east of Cleveland, TN during that blizzard. We had thundersnow, 60mph winds and ended up with 26" with drifts up to 10ft. You couldn't even see one end of my house or my front door. We were totally unprepared for that event, my wife's co-workers Dad lost his life walking out to his barn to check the animals that night and her family had to store his body out in that barn until the authorities could get out there a week later. They had to call in half tracks from the National Guard to help emergency services and the Electric Company in getting to down lines and sub-stations. It was a NIGHTMARE!!!

This storm doesn't have quite the model support I would expect for a 'superstorm'. You'd think something that powerful would have tremendous consensus even if it is taken lightly by the models getting this close to the game. ECMWF sharpens the ridge out west long term which would be beneficial to us. But then again, doesn't it always show an arctic front/better troughs a week+ out . Hope the trend continues.

Love that massive storm crashing down :cheesy:. Looks like the AO could crash and tumble down into February. We'll have plenty of cold on our side of the Planet.

San Angelo has just had bad luck....... Maybe that will change... You guys have been surrounded by some pretty good snowstorms..

It 's hard to forget that jan 12th 1985 snowstorm in south Texas... Many got 10-16 inches...

1998 storm dropped 9 to 12 inches around Midland

1987 storm dropped 20-30 inches in and around El Paso

2004 storms dropped 10-16 inches SE of Houston

And the February 1895 Blizzard in Houston we all dream about.... Many in SE texas got 18 inches and some places just north and east of Houston got 24-36 inches... Roof damage from something like that would be insane..

I just named a city I thought was close to that area with the amount. :cheesy: Wouldn't that be a record or or they are used to these massive snowstorms? LOL!
