Can't remember the last big ice storm in Dallas, been mostly sleet/snow last few years. There was a forecast for a big ice storm a few years ago and we even had an ice storm warning but the forecast busted. I think heavy precip brought down warm air

The last big ice'ish storm I remember was in 2003. It was mostly a sleet event, but my driveway and the streets were solid ice, as 3inches of sleet fell, and then freezing rain fell on top of that.

Another long range one to watch for the Gulf coast. 0c line is very nearly to the coast and a Low is in the Gulf!

I think Wxman57 should take a bike trip to Laredo tomorrow or Saturday. Not quite 80, but looks like it'll be mild and somewhat muggy. Maybe the heat index could push it there!


Friday...Partly cloudy in the morning then becoming mostly cloudy. Highs in the mid 70s. Light south winds increasing to around 10 mph in the afternoon.

Saturday...Cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers. Highs in the upper 70s. South winds 10 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon.

That is probably the one I remember in Beaumont. I couldn't remember the year but I guessed it was around 1996. I remember everything being crazy in Beaumont and we were the only people in my family with power so we had everyone at our house and the moment they all got there we lost power, The only reason anyone could even come is because we all lived close by but I don't know if the streets were awful, it was mostly the trees causing issues with power lines.

Last years Ice storm was the worst I can remember. The entire town was without power for 3 days and my aunt who lives north of Altus, OK was without power for 6 weeks. Thousands of polls snapped in the area including the big main line with large 70 foot poles. It was chain reaction and they snapped like twigs. It got cold in a house encased in ice without power for 3 days

It means heavy thunderstorms and potentially severe weather before the cold front arrives . A lot of people are forgetting that aspect. 2-3 in rains are not out of possibility along the gulf coast before the main show Tues. HPC has over 2.5+ inch rains Houston to southern LA days 4-5.

Gosh, what a disaster that would be for the Super Bowl.

Anyone remember the Jan. 1, 1979 ice storm that plagued the Cotton Bowl when Joe Montana and Notre Dame came to town. Wicked ice storm for sure.

At least Jerry's little party will be indoors.

I seem to be missing something. The precip map shows Houston in the heavy precip zone Feb. 2-3. Feb. 2 is Wednesday, and the cold will likely have already settled in over SE Texas. In fact, earlier today wxman57 said that he could not rule out flurries in Houston later in the day on Feb. 1 (Tuesday). Will be interesting to see this unfold...

Well the 0z nam is out, found it pretty interesting. Seems to be on track, showing a 1044mb high diving southward, and by 84 hours (i believe midday monday) the cold front looks to be right at the KS/OK border. The trough is out west right at the nevada/california/arizona border intersection so it appears to be approaching slower than the cold air from the north, at least to me. If im interpreting this right, it looks like the nam has the stage set and all the ingredients coming together for a good ol' texas winter storm within the next 24-48 hours after the end of the run.

I remember it all to well. We were miserable, probably partially exacerbated by the fact ND was beating U of H. The traffic was horrendous. It took us 10 hours to drive back to Houston instead of the normal 5 and we were in and out of ice and snow all the way into Houston.
Since the game is inside, I don't think it would affect it that much. Some people with tickets might have problems getting there, but the teams will already be in town and you can be sure they are prepared for almost any contingency.

What would stop such a cold surge of air like that? I would think a stronger H would be able to come further south as I always think of what someone told me about a pile of sand and how the more you pile on top the more it just kinda slides down to the bottom.
