Portastorm wrote:Storm2K News covered this afternoon’s weather briefing at the Portastorm Weather Center in Austin regarding predicted wintry weather for many portions of the Lone Star State this week. The PWC director led off his briefing by saying that today’s event was being sponsored by the “great nation of Canada and its fine weather model.”

The briefing continued as the PWC director said his office is forecasting several inches of snow for the DFW Metroplex on Tuesday with patches of freezing rain and sleet mixed in. “Folks like HockeyTx82 and Brandon8181 will be able to play street hockey on the snow by tomorrow night. And in other places in the Metroplex, sleet pellets will be bouncing around the Dallas ground just like how Marion Barber carries a football,” the PWC director said. “Further !”

I got mentioned by name in the briefing!!!! I can sleep easy tonight. Time to sharpen up the ol' ice skates. :P

Front looks to be passing through Childress from latest obs. I know Lubbock just got it.

Looks like it is absolutely screaming down...

Really? I thought it was still not to Oklahoma quite yet. What map are you looking at?

Are we sure this is "the" front? There was a front that pushed down yesterday, but stalled out south of Dallas and has been sloshing around. The weather obs I was watching on the southern Kansas border haven't budged their temps for about an hour. Just curious about what's going on with the push of the really cold stuff.

I've been watching Lubbock and they've gone from 60 to 46 in a matter of a 1/2 hour to an hour or so. Winds gusting strong from the N at Childress now..

It looks like the core is still further north but I can't tell. Does the new front push the existing cold air ahead of it like a bow wave? Does the existing cold air mass slow down the march of the arctic air? Does it have any effect? Doesn't seem like it is moving as fast as it was given some of the report temps from earlier.

This always happen during winter events. You watch the temps so close they feel like they'll never be here.

18z has temps in the 40s in North Oklahoma and 50s central right now. Clearly thats not the case.

H5 maps look good, with that kind of ridging I don't like the GFS' progressive nature (it does have that tendency). I think it will dig a little more than that.

BTW for all those wanting to get excited (optimism here). Take a look at this blizzard on the GFS.

I can't find this map this far out. Do you know where to access it?

Look here:
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod ... amer.shtml

Choose the model run time (00Z, 06Z, 12Z, or 18Z). Choose the panel size (course, medium or fine) according to your monitor size (medium works well for a 19-24" monitor). Then choose from either the "10m-Wnd 06hr Pcpn" column or click the link at the top to go to the upper-air GFS graphics and choose from the "MSLP 1000 - 500mb" column.

I also like to look at the twister site for GFS snow accumulation maps. Go here:
http://www.twisterdata.com/

Click the "GFS" tab up top and open the "Winter" section in the left navigation frame. Choose "snow depth" from the list of winter panels then navigate to the hour you want to look at. In addition, this map is clickable to produce an atmospheric sounding for wherever you click on the map.

Sorry LOL you know the deal!! How do you bookmark these mages?[/quote]

Enid # from 50 minutes ago is 32 but west on the same latitude gets you into the 20's in the OK panhandle.
