That'll be a brief transition I believe. It stated that way here too.

We've got something falling in Katy. I wouldn't say it's snow, or if it is, it's the tiniest snow flurries you've ever seen. It might be frozen rain. But more like a drizzle.

(How's that for amateur )

Thats what I mentioned earlier that it looks to be coming faster. What all did they say about us in DFW? Whats the latest for us?

This shows the band I'm referring to for San Antonio. Like a squall line, it will build SSWward.

Official forecast! No, but seriously, not official!

Convective snow? What is Convective snow?

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAKE CHARLES LA
910 PM CST THU FEB 3 2011

.UPDATE...NARROW BAND OF FREEZING RAINS...SOME SNOW OVER CENTRAL
LOUISIANA...
CONTINUES TO ADVANCE SLOWLY EAST ACROSS THE AREA.
PRECIPITATION ASSOCIATED WITH EMBEDDED SHORTWAVE ENERGY WITHIN
SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW ALOFT. THUS FAR AT THE AIRPORT WITH THIS
LATEST FEATURE HAVE RECEIVED ONLY 0.05 INCHES. CARS HOWEVER ARE
IMPRESSIVELY COATED AND PLAN ON MAKING USE OF AN INTERN TO CLEAN
MINE.

LACK OF PRECIP IN THE WAKE OF THIS BAND HAS TRIGGERED NUMEROUS CALLS
FROM PERSONS LOOKING AT THE RADAR AND ASSUMING THE WORST IS
MOVING THROUGH. MODELS SUGGESTING THIS NOT TO BE THE CASE AS
INCREASING LIFT OVERSPREADS THE AREA AS THE NIGHT PROGRESSES WITH
THE APPROACH OF THE WEST TEXAS LOW.

GRIDS LOOKS EXCELLENT AND ADVISORIES/WARNINGS SET UP WELL. NO
EVENING UPDATE PLANNED.

I can also confirm that the diameter of the flakes have increased since the onset of precip & the radar is very deceptive. Even light precip on radar is heavier in reality. Seeings how this is a very dry snow, the radar returns are very light.

Also, our dewpoint was 14 at 8:55PM, so it is not requiring a lot of moisture to fall.

To confirm Portastorm's 'other' precip type, radar is showing some kind of mixing happening around SA. Odd since I assumed these areas would be fully frozen aloft. Waco is in the thick of things and it is knocking of DFW's doorstep.

That band down by waco seems to be coming straight north northeast towards DFW. Is that possible?

NWS is saying that the Corpus sounding was showing a shallow warm layer of easterly winds. I wonder if the surface low developing in the Gulf is responsible for our freezing drizzle/rain development. Interesting stuff.

NWS is saying another hour or two of the freezing drizzle/rain stuff and then a transition to snow. Heck, nobody I know of said we'd have freezing drizzle/rain so this deal is already surprised the experts.

It's really tough when AUS/SAT/HGX doesn't let up weather balloons for soundings. We need to write a letter to the NWS for such. Hard to verify when the only thing you can go by is model estimates.
