Re: Texas Winter 2010-2011
I'm right there with ya, txagwxman...
The Catastrophic AGW folks were saying just a few years ago that snow would be a rarity by now....
Now, the same people are saying that AGW is causing all of the cold and snow. It's insane...
BTW, we have about 4.5 inches of fresh powder here at SMU, at 75 and Mockingbird just north of downtown Dallas...

Alright gang, let's cut the global warming talk and get back to the real weather since there is plenty of it!

This will be our best shot for significant accumulations since last night around midnight as returns are showing heavy snow in about 8 counties right now beginning to become more widespread and strengthen. ATM an additional inch at least looks imminent for FTW westward through 8am.
EDIT: Not trying to be bullish but im tired of hearing all the amateurs go on and on about all the "surprises" from last night and this morning's system.
I'm watching it grow....getting close to springing back up in my area on the dal/tarr line on radar...might get a little more out of this.

You definitely made an excellent call on this one, SouthernMet. We are lucky to have you and the other pro's on S2K. I have always been a weather junkie, but I have learned a ton from you guys since I found this forum.

Message received.

I see that you got a decent taste of winter this time around... Maybe not the 3+ inches of fluffy snow that we were hoping for... but Lucy definitely didn't pull the ball away on you this time.

Given the higher amounts of snow in the DFW area than expected (I'm not talking short term forecasts but from two days ago) ... synoptically, what happened? Seems like the ULL made a sharper turn at the base of the trough and maybe moved further north than initially thought? I'm curious.

Portastorm, congrats on the snow! Sorry for the fatal accidents in Austin and other places. The weather we love is beautiful, but also dangerous and unfortunately at times deadly.
Enjoy your snow day.
As for what happened in Dallas, I guess it's called the "Jerry World" effect.
Jerry goes and schedules a big football party at the Death Star and then BANG! a week of almost unprecedented weather descends on the Metroplex.
And now there's a little talk this morning about a chance of snow/sleet DURING the big game!

West side of Metro west of I-35 = Less people, more rural. Thats why it isn't being made a big deal atm but the reason why I am pointing it out is because From Stephenville, Weatherford to Decatur line is very high precip rates which means heavy snowfall and with 20:1 snowfall ratios there is the potential for decent additional accum through 9am. This is close enough to fort worth that by the next 30 minutes moderate snow should pick up around fort worth and spread east through DFW toward Dallas.

Score 1 for Porta! hope you shut out Lucy next week
or the rest of winter if any.. Is that more sleet than snow? It looks like a mix of both or IP..

It's really a mix. We had freezing drizzle then snow grains/graupel?, then light snow. Underneath the white you see there is about a 1/8 to 1/4 inch of ice.
Now, we need to get some snow to our friends in Houston and Tomball!

It is called WEATHER. Feb 1973 it snowed 2 times in Houston 2 weeks apart.
Yep, I lived there then and remember it vividly. Wasn't a wimpy snow, either.
1/2 inch of snow at my house now, on top of about 1/4 inch of ice. Everything is white. Roads not melting. Beautiful! Still, I would've liked a little more of the white stuff....
