Most Interesting Name Lists (Atlantic and Eastern Pacific)

#1 Postby HurricaneRyan » Thu Feb 03, 2011 7:10 pm

Which Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Name Lists Interest You the Most?

Here's 1-6 for those not sure:

1 (1979, 1985, 1991, 1997, 2003, 2009)
2 (1980, 1986, 1992, 1998, 2004, 2010)
3 (1981, 1987, 1993, 1999, 2005, 2011)
4 (1982, 1988, 1994, 2000, 2006, 2012)
5 (1983, 1989, 1995, 2001, 2007, 2013)
6 (1984, 1990, 1996, 2002, 2008, 2014)

For me it's List #5 for these reasons:
1. Each season this name list is used, at least one name is retired. Alicia in 1983, Hugo in 1989, Luis, Marilyn, Opal, & Roxanne in 1995, Allison, Iris, and Michelle in 2001, and Dean, Felix, and @ Noel in 2007.
2. That in total makes for 12 names retired throughout the use of this list. The most from any list.
3. It was the first year of the High-activity Period.
4. The names are stylish and modern than other namelists.
5. Only 11 names from the original use are left: Barry, Chantal, Erin, Gabrielle, Jerry, Karen, Pablo, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, Wendy. That's the lowest number of original names left.

In second place is List 4 for these reasons:
1. It seems there is a pattern everytime this is used. The first time it was used, there was an El Nino. Then in 1988, they had a slightly above average season. In 1994, they once again had an El Nino, but more memorable storms. In 2000, they had an active season. In 2006, they once again had El Nino.
2. Only 3 names have been retired from this list...EVER! Gilbert, Joan, and Keith. That's the lowest number ever
3. I was born the year this list was used, so I kinda respect it, lol.
4. Florence is the only F Name from the first use that is left. Frederic, Frances, Floyd, Felix, and Fran have all been retired, leaving Florence as the only original left.

And in the third place is the Third Place for these reason:
1. For the first three uses, no storm names were retired. In fact, no names from this list got retired until 1999, which is the latest start for a List to have a name be retired.
2. It's the only list to be exhausted and go into the greek Alphabet.
3. It broke many records when this list was used. Including for having the most names retired, and the ifrst V and W storms, and the first S and W retired names.

Well there's mine.

What about u?

Atlantic only, because It's the only basin I've memorized. ;D

List 2, easily, for a lot of reasons.

Not only was it the list in use when I became interested in hurricanes, (2004, when Charley Frances and Jeanne hit), it encompasses 3 of the most interesting seasons IMO, 2010, 2004, and 1998. Also 1992 had Andrew, and 1980 had Allen.

Another reason is, it simply has the best names. Every single name on the list with the exception of Earl, retired, in use, or retirement pending, has been just a completely awesome name. No other season has as many good names as this one.

Notable storms from this list:
Allen (1980): 190 mph windspeed, retired.
Andrew (1992): You know this one. Retired
Bonnie (1998): Looked over for retirement despite causing over a billion dollars in damage to NC.
Georges (1998): Legendary Gulf hurricane, cat 2 hit to the keys and Mississippi, Cat 3 into Puerto Rico. Retired.
Mitch (1998): One of the deadliest Atlantic hurricanes of all time, 18,000+ dead or missing, Cat 5. Retired
Charley (2004): Cat 4 hurricane that caught Florida residents off-guard, 2nd most expensive hurricane of its time, second only to Andrew, another hurricane on this naming list. Retired
Frances (2004): 6 weeks after Charley, a cat 2 slow-mover that only stalled relief efforts for Charley. Retired
Ivan (2004): Cat 5, devastated Alabama and Florida. Retired
Jeanne (2004): over 3000 deaths in Haiti and over $3 billion in damage to Florida. Retired.
Alex (2010): Strongest June hurricane since the 60's, possible retirement.
Karl (2010): Cat 3 direct hit on Veracruz, retirement likely
Matthew (2010): Billions in damage, hundreds dead, retirement likely
Tomas (2010): damaging hurricane, retirement possible

And those are just the ones worth retiring, there's plenty of harmless storms in those lists that were just plain cool.

Danielle, Fiona, Hermine, Julia, and Nicole yes.

And what do you mean by: Retired, in use, or retirement pending.

Every name that's ever been on List 2, whether it was retired, still in use, or retirement pending is an awesome name. Except Earl.

Haha ok.

Yeah, Earl is a crappy name. Not even Hannah Montana can change my opinion on that.

List 2 had Allen, which was replaced by Andrew, which is now Arthur. Allen and Andrew were Category 5 hurricanes.

Some of the most costliest hurricanes occurred in List 3, Floyd, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.

List 1 and 4 had the most El Nino
1991, 1997, and 2009 (List 1)
1982, 1994, and 2006 (List 4).

Interesting to note is that List 6 has always used at least 12 names in each of its 5 usages. Average-13.4 storms per use.

Good point

1984 -12 Storms
1990 - 14 Storms
1996 - 13 Storms
2002 - 12 Storms
2008 - 16 Storms

That's probably why we got Cesar, Diana, Fran, Gustav, Hortense, Ike, Isidore, Klaus, Lili, and Paloma were all retired, and why we got our first K and P retirements.

And yet despite all its activity there has never been a Category 5 from that list.

If Alex is retired (likely), it will be the first time a list letter has gone through three retirements and onto its fourth name. Any of Colin, Fiona, Gaston, Igor, Julia or Matthew would put the list on its third name in 2016 (of those, only Matthew and Igor have reasonable retirement cases but are not sure bets).

Karl and Tomas - the other likely retirement candidates - would be names that have existed since the beginning of the list.

Only five names are the third to be be placed on the list after two retirements (one of which is itself likely to be retired after last year):

Alex (Allen, Andrew)
Andrea (Alicia, Allison)
Fred (Frederic, Fabian)
Isaias (Isidore, Ike)
Melissa (Marilyn, Michelle)

Gustav probably was at one point but before it made landfall in cuba.

I don't have a favorite list. I have certain names that I dislike being on the lists, and that leads to me having least favorite lists.

I really don't like the use of diminutive forms of names ending in -ie or -y as hurricane names. To me such forms sound too "friendly" or "child-like" to be scary. If people's given names are going to be used to name hurricanes, I think they should be names that have a chance of sounding like powerful adults.

So I don't like having Shary, Cindy, Tammy, Debby, Patty, Sandy, Tony, Dolly, Sally, Teddy, Vicky, Danny, and Mindy on the lists. They all seem to "cutesy" for hurricanes to me. Jerry and Larry aren't quite so bad because they've been used as official given names so often in the USA that they manage to sound "adult" to me in spite of originally being pet forms. Bonnie, Harvey, Leslie, Barry, and Wendy are more acceptable to me since they aren't primarily of "nickname" origin (though Wendy does still sound a bit too "cute" for my taste.)

So lists #4 and #6 would be my least favorite because they each contain four of the names I really don't like. #4 is a bit worse than #6 because I think Debby is a worse name for a hurricane than Dolly -- Dolly Parton's image makes Dolly seem more "adult" to me, I guess.

I suppose my two favorite lists would be a tie between #2 and #5. #2 has only one name I really dislike (Shary), and #5 has none of my worse "dislikes" but three of the semi-bads (Barry, Jerry, and Wendy.)

I don't necessarily "dislike" these names as names for human beings. I just don't think they are the best choices for tropical storms.

I don't know man. Teddy could be a scary name especially if you think of Teddy Roosevelt. Speak softly and carry a BIG stick.
