To avoid confusion the WMO would probably go with ee-in and put that in their pronunciation guide. But I'm totally guessing on this.

I think the problem with Ian/Ivan isn't that people would pronounce Ian as "eye-an" but rather a lot of French/Spanish speakers probably mispronounced Ivan as the proper Russian "eee-vahn", so Ian would sound similar to that.

It is not the traditional way to pronounce Ian, and most people don't use that pronunciation, but there are some Americans who do. The most prominent is the actor Ian Ziering, who used to be on the original Beverly Hills 90210 television show. He pronounces his name to rhyme with Brian. His parents saw the name written and just assumed it rhymed with Brian when they gave it to him.

The EC report also has some interesting data on Igor. I would estimate the landfall intensity was 80 kt as a result, since 67 kt 10-min winds translate to about 76 kt 1-min winds and it is possible the strongest winds may not have been measured.

Fanapi killed more people and did more damage(at least in U.S. dollars). Plus Megi affected some of the areas that Fanapi had hit earlier which is going to mean less damage no matter how strong it is. I can see why they would have retired Fanapi over Megi.

I know Alex, and Karl are probably going to retired. Igor, maybe. Agatha, I don't know. One thing, Fanapi did make landfall as Cat 3/Cat 2, but I've seen other Cat 3 typhoons not get retired that made landfall, such as Nock-ten (2004) or Etau (2003)

Agatha HAS to be retired, I mean it killed more people than any of the Atlantic systems. I think that Igor may be retired after reading the report that confirms that it is the costliest tropical cyclone in the area it hit, and as I've said before Alex, Karl and Tomas have a good chance of being retired as well.

If Agatha isn't retired I agree it would be dumb. But they are really fickle about retirements in the EPAC. Tate 1961, Liza 1976, Tico 1983 for example. All deadly and all unretired.

I think it had more to do with Jeanne killing over 3000 people in Haiti, that led to its retirement.

For Gordon Haiti didn't request retirement and the WMO didn't retire it because they thought Haiti didn't have an adequate warning system in place. Hanna your guess is as good as mine. Maybe like Gordon they may not have requested retirement. I have no idea though.

I think they should do like a fan poll kinda thing. Like the WMO sends out a list of the unretired names after the season that they were borderline on retiring but didn't and people get to vote for the one they think most deserves to be retired.

This is not American Idol or any TV show. I don't understant why something that 99.9% of the population could care less about has to be given such an importancy. People only care to know what they need to do to be ready and when, they care less if it's named John, Juan or Jean!
