Re: 2011 Sendai Earthquake & Tsunami
Rob thank you for all you are doing to keep us abreast of what is going on. I would be an absolute wreck if I lived in that area and was having all those aftershocks. Guess I better not plan on moving into any earthquake prone areas during what is left of my life.
Hurricanes/TC's aren't any fun, but at least I have some warning when they are coming.

Ha, I know pretty awesome voice eh? Ha just kidding.
Any how despite still being jolted awake at 11 at night I do have some good news, just found out my wife and son will be returning to Japan in the coming week, thus very good news and I couldn't be more happy. Just an indicator of things slowly getting back to normal.

I continue to attempt to wrap my head around it, seems it is not real in some aspects. If something the size of this event happened state side I'm not sure what people would do, to put it in perspective Katrina, one of the worst disasters in recent USA memory had less than one tenth of the fatalities.
Good thing though is the Japanese are doing great at going on about there life's here, Its one thing to admire about the human spirit. In tokyo you wouldn't know something so devastating has recently happened if you didn't know. The subtle hints are store lights and large neon signs are dimmed to save electric, otherwise life is normal. (Much different farther north near Sendia of course, but I have not been up to that region.)

Well, sadly Typhoon Songda caused upwards of 13 deaths in the tsunami hit areas, mainly due to mudslides in the regions where the earth is still incredibly unstable. A very sad situation as the tsunami continues to cause deaths months after the fact.
We are still asked to conserve power out here but I have not seen any black outs for a long period of time. Overall though it is life as usual.
NHK World does continue to monitor the radiation and believe it or not it is still released in to the atmosphere. But out here on the kanto plain it is so small it is something you just realize and live with.

I didn't follow Songda after Okinawa. Somehow I remember reading something that led me to believe it was no longer a threat. Very sad to hear that it caused more deaths in an area that has seen far too much death.

A deep bow to the Japanese:

Above one can see pictures taken shortly after the earthquake/tsunami and beside them (or below) pictures taken recently. I don't think anywhere on earth has any country managed to clear debris from a natural disaster, of the magnitude they suffered, so quickly.

Japan's Meteorological Agency and researchers have found that the tsunami of March 11th reached heights of up to 40 meters.
The precise height of the waves was not clear because automatic tide-gauge stations were destroyed and blackouts and communication failures occurred at the time of the disaster.
Experts have looked into traces of each tsunami in the affected area and found that around 10-meter waves reached wide areas of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures.
They also found tsunami reached up to 40.5 meters in Miyako City in Iwate Prefecture, 37.8 meters in Noda village also in Iwate Prefecture, and 34.7 meters in Onagawa town in Miyagi prefecture.
Based on the collected data, researchers are now working on discovering how the giant tsunami was triggered.

Can find nothing on TV news channels about it. Praying for those folks in Japan. A 7.1 on the Japanese scale meter with Tsunami warning.

CNN carrying this as breaking news right now. Still considered to be an aftershock. If tsunami was generated it should start hitting the shore in the next few minutes according to CNN. However, a geophysicist at the USGS in Colorado just said if one had been generated it would have already hit, so it appears there was no tsunami generated.
