Hottest April ever!

Through today (4.27.11), this has been the hottest April in Austin, Texas, in 156 years of weather record-keeping.

And no signs of it abating ... ugh.

It has been pretty hot in Florida too....probably the hottest April I can remember. There were no breaks at all.

And then comes May 2nd, when it only got up to 55F! It won't last - supposed to get into the 90's by the weekend. But I was reading an article that said the abnormally dry (dryest Feb-April ever) weather can cause very cold or very hot spells.

It's really wrong to need to turn on the heat in May here. So I didn't.

Yeah it was a scorcher. I am hoping for a cool May, June and July...

Well they're sayin enjoy today's 70's cause we won't be seein em again till October! I went out to enjoy but came in wheezing cause there's a fire somewhere and the smoke is setting off my asthma. I can't see it but I can smell it. Smells like a structure fire but I don't see any news about one so it might be Mexico fires.

NWS says winds are from NE but I can feel some coming from SE. Weird.

Earlier this week, the Austin/San Antonio NWS office mentioned that smoke from the annual Mexican ag fires would probably be moving northward into Texas. So far it hasn't been too much of a factor due to the strength of the southwesterly/westerly winds aloft. Those winds aloft are supposed to be weakening and, thus, we could see more smoke and haze from our friends down south.

Yup. I haven't heard anything abt it being here today, but my nose and lungs usually let me know way before the news people...

Well we had a record low for May (38F) but it's heating up rapidly.

Meanwhile Salt Lake City had one of its coldest Aprils ever, probably 6th or 7th coldest overall and the coldest since 1975, and the 5th wettest on record as well.

Average temperature at San Angelo was 74F (+9.0) above climo. This was our hottest April on record as well. Only 1 day with a max temperature below 80 degrees.

As south Texas becomes a desert it will be more common to get extremes in temperatures, especially high ones. Read up on Climateprogress.org about how deserts are expanding rapidly. Also ties into the latest research about how increasing CO2 is strengthening the cap, making it that much more unlikely that daytime heating and surface features will be able to break it.
