I'll start...

I just found out a friends son survived the joplin tornado. He plays baseball for missouri southern and fortunately he was at his girlfriends home. His apartment was totally demolished. His roommate and another friend survived the tornado in his bathroom. All our friends son found that belonged to him was a shoe.

Anyway, the news today:

123 now dead(8th deadliest tornado in U.S. history)

Fire official says a staggering 1,500 are missing(hopefully most of those are just people who couldn't contact anyone)

I can see that many missing. There was absolutely nothing left of some places. Even if you went into an interior room some didn't stand a chance.

It is scary to think about. I do hope it is because of unavailable communications as opposed to the fact it is very difficult to survive an EF5 tornado no matter how you shelter.

Even if like 90% are found alive, that's still another 150 dead... that high makes me think it's not "fog of war" as it was called in Tuscaloosa(which the missing there only got to 400 or so...)

And to think, it was quiet just a week ago! Shows that it really only takes one, though we've had many, many more than that!

I like the thought of a "general" discussion page. The outbreak pages are to keep everything up to date with watches, warnings and outbreak-specific discussion.

What a difference a few days makes! At mid-month, May had been tranquil, but now it has turned catastrophic. The rest of the way home seems hard to predict. Memorial Day weekend looks good, but May might end with more problems next Tuesday and possibly Wednesday. Too early to tell when Mother Nature might go mad next. June is typically also an active month, especially in northern areas.

THANKS for setting up this page!! Was feeling bad yesterday about making comments in the midst of the posted bulletins, but it begs discussion. Heartbreaking to wake this morning and find another 13 killed in TX/OK/KS last night.

Yes, heard that 1500 missing figure, too. I believe someone in the media misunderstood and it's been circulated grossly. The figure of unaccounted for that I read yesterday was 130.

Or, it may be because the Joplin school district is trying to locate every single pupil enrolled in the schools. They told the media it's because they want to offer "assistance" but I bet it has to do with their daily $ per student and budget issues. If my family lost their home and/or had injuries or deaths the last thing I would worry about is that my children's school wanted to hear a status! How busybody!

Most next of kin have located their relatives who were in the tornado, and we are beginning to hear the story of those who are truly missing. Did you hear about the little baby missing? And what about Will Norton, aspiring filmmaker, sucked out of his hummer? What a talented lad!

Sorry I didn't see this thread last night and this morning when I posted in the warning thread. Thanks for starting this one.

It is indeed scary and heartbreaking.

Two friends in OK - both made it out fine but one had a close call.

Most of you know that I work with dog rescues so I get a little inside info on that front. One rescue and one shelter were demolished yesterday. About half the animals at both places are fatalities. The shelter said the only thing left were some outside kennels.

Has anyone ever seen where they treat tornado warnings like severe thunderstorm warnings before? I don't recall ever seeing one tornado warning stretched over a line of storms and just pushed forward like as though it were a bow echo.

Rumor has it that the pondscum westboro baptist church will be showing up in joplin on sunday. Forget that as a rumor. I found it on the pondscum's website. I heard the Patriot Guard will be there. I hope something evil/bad happens to the wbc picketers.

I found out more through a press release on their site. They're picketing obama and the mo. governor. As i said on fb, it wouldn't sadden me in the least if a stray bullet found its way through his heart.

I have no idea how they can still have rights. Its severe groups like this, and Nazi groups I kinda wonder why we protect their rights as people, when they kinda violate others by picketing this bs. I also would not feel a bit of sadness if they was killed.
