Could you move the fans a little more our way? This pesky high pressure ridge of death is right over us. Just a nudge. Thank you ma'am.

Oh ((((Tireman))) wish that I could. August 16th and Aug 18th are the only days we are forecasted to have wind directly from the north/northwest and at the most it is only supposed to be moving at 20 km/h (that and my fans/turbines just won't have a hope against that horrendous ridge that is sitting over you folks).

Even the fabled prairie winds are working against Texas. :(

I truly do hope a lot of your wildlife hightailed it outta there and headed north (hopefully however your nasty critters like the fireants etc stayed there and fried). Must admit some of those critters are why I am grateful for the cold we get (it has a nastier bite but it ain't a creepy crawler).

Must also admit I sat in our local park today watching the young ducklings and geese and whispered to them they had better be prepared for a long flight (I'm not sure how far down they'd have to go in Central/South America to reach decent wintering grounds). This is just sad beyond belief (praying especially for the poor Whooping Cranes).

"Whooping Crane occurs exclusively in North America. The historic mid-continental breeding range stretched from Alberta/Saskatchewan across the northeastern portions of the mid-continental prairies to near the southern end of Lake Michigan. The historic wintering grounds included the highlands of northern Mexico, the Texas Gulf coast, and portions of the Atlantic coast. Non-migratory populations occurred in Louisiana and possibly other areas in the southeastern United States. The species declined rapidly in the late 1800s and early 1900s as a result of hunting, collecting, and the conversion of its habitats to agriculture. By 1940, only the one self-sustaining flock remained. "

"Viewing is restricted at the whooping crane nesting grounds in Wood Buffalo National Park, located on the boundary of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. And while boat tours are offered at the wintering grounds in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge on the Texas Gulf, there's growing concern about the effects of tourism and commercial shipping in the fragile wetlands.

That makes Saskatchewan, the staging area for the 4,000-kms (2,500-mile) migration, one of the best places in the world to observe the elegant cranes. The environment is stable, the birds are widely dispersed throughout it, and it's accessible while thinly populated. Whooping cranes can linger more than a month here while foraging for the grain that fuels their long trip."

I'm happy for the folks in Del Rio. While most of us have drought approaching indescribable misery, I think Del Rio may have actually been worse than us.

As you know Shoshana we received nada here in Austin. It looks like rain and that's about it.

Yup. All we got was more humidity.

Yes.. First really really good rainfall since last October. I had forgotten what a gully washer was like. There were actually some flooding problems in the city. Looks like we have another chance tonight according to models.

To make things worse ... we have showers and storms just 40-50 miles to our west and northwest (and not really moving this way). Tantalizingly close but no cigar! :x

I think I felt a rain drop-a-lette. Either that or a tiny bird pooped on me.

Either way, I cleaned out the rain gauge. It had bugs and a spiderweb in it. Now that I think of it, it would have made a great photo of how dry it is...

Maybe that's a good omen. That mass of rain is slowly sinking south right now and maybe we'll get some. Or, it'll fizzle out before it gets to Austin (more likely).

I think I am going to faint *faints*. There's a shield of rain in central Texas and Dallas has a forecasted high temp below 90 in the middle of August O.o.

DFW:

Today: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1pm. High near 87. West wind between 5 and 10 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Waco's 100 streak ends today also.

I wish I could press the pause button on this weather. Overcast and 79. Off-and-on showers. It's been a while.

This describes what we got here in Austin (i.e. no rain). Of course, we're the one on the right side.

Forecast for my area calls for 104+ thru at least Wednesday  This morning was the first time the low temperature fell below 80 (got down to 79) since last Sunday.

In the meantime I will continue to monitor the progress of 93L because the forecast calls for it to be in the NW Caribbean by next Saturday.

NWS in Brownsville afternoon discussion.

.LONG TERM.../MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...NO MAJOR CHANGES ARE
EXPECTED IN THE ORIENTATION OF THE MID LEVEL RIDGE CURRENTLY
ANCHORED OVER THE SOUTH CENTRAL AND SOUTHWESTERN STATES THROUGH
NEXT SATURDAY. MEAN RH VALUES REMAIN LIMITED TO THE LOWEST LAYERS
OF THE ATMS WHICH WILL LIKELY RESULT IN SOME FAIR WX SC/CU FIELDS
MAINLY DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING HOURS. AS A RESULT
OF THE LIMITED RH VALUES WILL MAINTAIN NIL POPS UNTIL FURTHER
NOTICE AS THE SUBSIDENT ATMS IN PLACE OVER THE REGION LIMITS ANY
SIGNIFICANT CONV. WITH THE ONGOING DROUGHT CONDITIONS MAINTAINING
LOW SOIL MOISTURE VALUES...THE COMBINATION OF THIS AND THE STRONG
DIURNAL HEATING AND HIGH 1000-500 MB THICKNESS VALUES WILL KEEP
ABOVE NORMAL TEMPS IN PLACE THROUGH DAY 7. THE ATLANTIC TROPICS
REMAINS FAIRLY ACTIVE WITH NHC MONITORING A BROAD TROPICAL LOW
SOUTHWEST OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS. THIS FEATURE WILL LIKELY MOVE
INTO THE EASTER CARIB SE ON WED AND WILL BE LOCATED OVER THE NW
CARIB SOUTH OF CUBA BY NEXT SAT. WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE
PROGRESS OF THE FEATURE OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS.

It's really sorry when our best hope for rain at the moment -- 93L -- is a disorganized mess of clouds in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean! I'm mildly interested in the GFS spinning it up into a major cyclone and hitting Texas (the 0z run did the same thing). There's more chatter on that in the Active Storms thread.

Meanwhile, whatever convection popped up around Texas is supposed to die out and tomorrow we're back to the frying pan as the Death Ridge pushes east again. I guess I shouldn't complain as we stayed under 100 today thanks to the clouds. But some rain would have been nice. :(

.DISCUSSION...
A DIAL IN TO THE IAH ASOS INDICATES THAT THE TEMPERATURE HIT 100
DEGREES AGAIN TODAY...KEEPING HOUSTON`S ONGOING STREAK OF 100
DEGREE DAYS GOING AT 13 DAYS IN A ROW. THIS IS ALSO THE 24TH DAY
THIS SEASON OF 100 DEGREE TEMPERATURES IN HOUSTON...TYING WITH
1998 FOR THE SECOND HIGHEST TOTAL FOR AN ENTIRE SUMMER.

While we are at it, let us just break all the records...If the Astros can do it, so can Mother Nature....ugghhh

AS FOR THE RECORDS...THERE`S A GOOD CHANCE THAT HOUSTON`S
CONSECUTIVE DAY 100-DEGREE RECORD WILL BE TIED OR BROKEN IN THE
NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. EVEN IF THIS RECORD IS NOT BROKEN...OTHER
RECORDS ARE THREATENED INCLUDING THE MOST 100-DEGREE DAYS IN
AUGUST (14 DAYS IN 1993)...MOST 100-DEGREE DAYS IN A MONTH (18
DAYS IN JULY 1980)...AND MOST 100-DEGREE DAYS FOR AN ENTIRE SUMMER
(32 DAYS IN 1980).

Glad to see the thunderstorms out in West Texas the past few days, and that DFW got a bit of rain this morning. Wasn't much, but at this point anything helps. Irritating that every big storm system, whether it comes from the west or north, seems to die before it hits Austin :x .

On a side note, I flew up to Philadelphia yesterday. Everything here is so green, it's like another planet compared to Texas.

I just had another light rain shower move over my house a few hours ago. It was pretty nice having having rain today and Friday, even though it was light both times. Some is a lot better than none!
