Statement from local New Orleans Met
For all of my dedicated forum followers, I just wanted to let you know that we will be paying close attention to the Gulf this weekend. A lot of tropical energy will be moving into the Gulf over the next few days. So, there is the possibility that something could get going. It does seem to be the most likely area for development. The wave moving into the Gulf is splitting this morning, and we could also see development north of Haiti--near the Southeast Bahamas.
The wave off the African coast is likely to develop as well, according to the National Hurricane Center.
We'll keep you posted.

New Orleans does not need a cane!!
Heh. I remember that. I wasn't living on the Coast at that time. The wife and I, newly-weds, living in central Mississippi at the time, weren't really concerned in the least with tropical weather. We decided to drive down to Ft. Walton for a couple of days. We get to Hattiesburg, take US 98 and click on the radio. We then hear Elena is headed towards Ft. Walton. So we decide, "well, let's just go out to Dauphin Island". Maybe an hour later down the road we hear Elena is headed towards Mobile. FOILED AGAIN! We determine to just go to Biloxi. By the time we get to Jackson County along some small state highway, we hear Elena's headed for the Coast! LOL. We decided to have dinner at Baricev's and head back north. I guess that was the last evening Baricev's was ever open for business, and we were stuck in the crawling northward exodus along US 49. Great holiday trip there. LOL!!

Another short Elena story. A lady I work with had come down over the Labor Day weekend for an employment interview on Tuesday. She had heard of the storm, but having never experienced a hurricane, was not familiar with basic storm safety practices. She saw wrought iron tables and chairs chained to walls and thought "My God!! Are there that many theives down here?" LOLL

Some excitement in the GOM is fine by me....
Just don't let any hurricanes hit New Orleans. That place is woefully BELOW sea level. That's the very LAST thing 'Nawlins needs is a major 'cane to flood them out. A major evac of NO is extremely problematic at best.
Let's see a good Cat 2 in the GOM, then it weakens to a Cat 1 and hits land in an unpopulated region of the coast.
This way we have our excitement and no one gets hurt.

Yea I remember..I was supposed to go water skiing..elena hung around off our coast for three days...We eveacuated inland..the area was really messed up with that close call. Anyone wishing for some action..needs to be careful what they wish for. Don't get me wrong..I'd love some tropical weather..just not ever to that degree and not right now!!! We are saturated and need no more rain...!!!Lindaloo wrote:Good grief I hope not. Already had my Labor Day weekend ruined in 85. lol.

Too funny Agua!! She drove everybody insane. We boarded up and took shelter one night. Awoke the next day to find clear blue skies and no hint of a cane. Went to bed that night, awoke the next morning only to have to seek shelter again!! LOL!!
Baricev's did not survive Camille either, but they re-built. lol. All those casinos in Biloxi and further down the beach will not survive one period. NOW the ones on Back Bay will probably be okay.
I know Rainband!!
