Good morning. A long day today awaits as preparations will be in order for whatever this becomes.
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
629 AM AST SAT AUG 20 2011
.SYNOPSIS...THE TUTT WILL CONTINUE TO LIFT WEST NORTHWEST AND
WEAKEN TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY. A TROPICAL DISTURBANCE...LOCATED
ABOUT 500 MILES EAST OF THE LESSER ANTILLES EARLY THIS
MORNING...IS EXPECTED TO MOVE WEST TO WEST NORTHWEST DURING THE
NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AND HAS A HIGH CHANCE OF BECOMING A TROPICAL
CYCLONE. THIS SYSTEM IS FORECAST TO ENTER THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN
SUNDAY...THEN TRACK NEAR THE LOCAL AREA LATER SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND
NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY...BRINGING INCREASINGLY HAZARDOUS WEATHER
CONDITIONS TO THE LOCAL ISLANDS.
&&
.DISCUSSION...ALTHOUGH A GENERALLY FAIR AND MAINLY DRY WEATHER
PATTERN IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE LOCAL AREA TODAY THROUGH AT LEAST
THE FIRST PART OF TONIGHT...THE COMBINATION OF LEFTOVER
MOISTURE...LOCAL EFFECTS AND THE PROXIMITY OF THE RECEDING
TUTT...SHOULD ALLOW FOR SOME CLOUDINESS...SCATTERED SHOWERS AND
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS TO DEVELOP OVER THE CENTRAL AND WESTERN
INTERIOR AND WEST SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO THIS AFTERNOON.
THEREAFTER...LOCAL WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL BE DICTATED BY THE
APPROACHING TROPICAL WAVE (DISTURBANCE). THIS SYSTEM CONTINUES TO
SLOWLY BECOME BETTER ORGANIZED AND NHC HAS GIVEN IT A HIGH CHANCE
OF BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS. IT IS
EXPECTED TO MOVE WEST TO WEST NORTHWEST AND PASS ACROSS THE
NORTHEAST CARIBBEAN LATER SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY.
HOWEVER...ITS EXACT TRACK...HOW SOON IT DEVELOPS OR NOT...AND
EXACTLY WHAT THIS SYSTEM IS CLASSIFIED AS WHEN IT PASSES BY...
REMAIN UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME. AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE
HUNTER AIRCRAFT IS SCHEDULED TO INVESTIGATE THIS SYSTEM LATER
THIS AFTERNOON.
IRRESPECTIVE OF DEVELOPMENT...IT APPEARS THAT THE LOCAL ISLANDS
WILL RECEIVE AN INCREASE IN WINDS...SEAS...SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS...WITH THE "POTENTIAL" FOR SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS FROM
THESE...POSSIBLY INCLUDING FLASH AND RIVER FLOODING...LOCALIZED
COASTAL FLOODING AND DOWNED TREES.
THEREFORE...ALL LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS...RESIDENTS
AND VISITORS SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM.
&&
.AVIATION...VFR CONDS WILL PREVAIL ACROSS ALL TAF SITES THROUGH
THE FORECAST PERIOD. ISOLD SHWRS WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE ACROSS THE
LOCAL AREA THROUGH LATE MORNING HOURS BEFORE THUNDERSTORMS
DEVELOPS OVER THE INTERIOR AND SOUTHWEST SECTIONS OF PR DURING
AFTERNOON HOURS. MVFR CONDS AND MOUNTAIN OBSCURATION ARE POSSIBLE
IN AND AROUND TJMZ BTWN 20/18-20Z. THE WINDS OVER LAND WILL BE
LIGHT AND VARIABLE THROUGH AROUND 20/12Z BEFORE BECOMING MAINLY
EAST AT 10 TO 15 KNOTS...EXCEPT FOR LOCAL SEA BREEZE VARIATIONS.
&&
.MARINE...EXPECT WINDS OF 17 KNOTS OR LESS AND SEAS OF 6 FEET OR
LESS THROUGH TONIGHT. WINDS AND SEAS ARE THEN EXPECTED TO BECOME
INCREASINGLY HAZARDOUS LATER SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY...AS THE
TROPICAL DISTURBANCE MOVES WEST TO WEST NORTHWEST ACROSS THE
NORTHEAST CARIBBEAN.
&&
.PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...

steady rain all night here, calm not to no winds, and new trck puts harvey between the village of Placencia and Seine Bight Village (which is where I live). Really need that recon data from hurr flight. BZ Met still sticking to Dangriga landfall which is 37 miles away to North. They pretty much use GFDL as their main weather model, so I believe they are basing landfall on this. STILL not hurricane watch from NEMO.

Good afternoon Luis
I just heard the Weather Channel say the recon flight to investigate 97L has been cancelled or delayed? Do you know why? Will they be going out later?
Thanks
Barbara

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
419 PM AST SAT AUG 20 2011
.SYNOPSIS...A TROPICAL DISTURBANCE...LOCATED ABOUT 250 MILES EAST
OF THE LESSER ANTILLES THIS AFTERNOON...IS EXPECTED TO MOVE WEST TO
WEST NORTHWEST DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AND HAS A HIGH
CHANCE OF BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE. THIS SYSTEM IS FORECAST TO
ENTER THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN SUNDAY...THEN TRACK NEAR THE LOCAL
AREA LATER SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY.
&&
.DISCUSSION...ISOALTED TO SCATTERED SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS
DEVELOPED ACROSS THE WEST INTERIOR SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO. MOST
OF THESE SHOWERS WILL DISSIPATE AT AROUND SUNSET. THIS DRY AIRMASS
WILL LIMIT THE SHOWER DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THIS EVENING.
A LARGE AND STRONG TROPICAL WAVE NOW LOCATED EAST OF THE LESSER
ANTILLES WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE WEST NORTHWEST AT AROUND 20 MPH.
THE OUTER BANDS WILL BEGIN TO AFFECT THE ANEGADA PASSAGE LATER
THIS AFTERNOON AND WILL BEGIN TO AFFECT THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. THE BULK OF MOISTURE ASSOCIATED TO
THE TROPICAL WAVE WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE TOWARD THE LOCAL
REGION...GENERATING HEAVY SHOWERS ACROSS THE REGION ON SUNDAY AND
MONDAY...FOR THIS REASON A FLASH FLOOD WATCH WAS ISSUED FOR PR AND
THE USVI.
THE FREQUENCY AND THE INTENSITY OF THE RAINBANDS WILL INCREASE
ACROSS THE REGION THIS SYSTEM MOVES CLOSER AND ACROSS THE LOCAL
REGION. ALSO EXPECT STRONG GUSTY WINDS ASSOCIATED TO THIS BANDS.
ALTHOUGH THE RECONS DID NOT FOUND ANY CLOSE CIRCULATION AT THE
SURFACE LEVEL...RESIDENTS AND VISITORS OF THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
AND PUERTO RICO ARE ENCOURAGED TO CLOSELY MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF
THIS SYSTEM.

.AVIATION...MAINLY VRF CONDS WILL PREVAIL ACROSS THE LOCAL TAF SITES
THIS EVENING. HOWEVER...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH GUSTY WINDS
WILL BEGIN TO DEVELOP ACROSS TNCM AND TKPK OVERNIGHT WITH PERIODS OF
MVFR OR EVEN IFR CONDITIONS...EARLY IN THE MORNING AS THE LEADING
EDGE OF THE TROPICAL WAVE MOVES ACROSS THESE ISLANDS. THIS MOISTURE
WILL PROPAGATE RAPIDLY TO THE WEST AFFECTING TIST...TISX AND TJSJ

HOURS...THIS MOISTURE WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REST OF PUERTO RICO...
AFFECTING TJPS...TJMZ AND TJBQ TOMORROW AFTERNOON.

ok sorry for not following through while storm landed was tied up trying to finish some work in case we got blackout. Ok so far reports of damage not too bad. at 10.30am a freak tornado hit Crooked Tree Village which is North West of Belize City but in swamp land, one house demolished and another damaged, one car was trashed by tree slung at it by the tornado. BZ Met says it was spawned from thunder head in feederband, these ppl never seen water spout let alone tornado before, so scared them to bits. Sadly its also levelled allot of the cashew trees which are the main cash crop for the village. Reports so far indicate the areas affected mostly by the landfall is dangriga, hopkins & sittee river (south from dangriga). Damage not really reported yet, trees down is mostly what I've been hearing.
We just had heavy rain and approx 10-15 knt winds on peninsula about hour before landfall. Punta Gorda only had light rain and reg winds for this time year. A friend who has wind meter in her house which is on lagoonside of Placencia village posted on FB that she recorded peak of 15mph during the roughest weather. Rain drizzle now stopped still overcast but we got no major rain here. Waiting for all clear now, only Belize city north has been given all clear by NEMO so far. Radar shows clear for us its all heading inland, in fact looks like it will be in Guatemala in next few hours, but cancun now looks to be getting some serious tail end weather. Thanks to everyone for ur support while tracking this system. Now its onto invest 97L which is looking very impressive on sat, but no fun on the ground I bet. Keep safe, at least this one doesn't (so far on models) look to be a worry for us here in Western caribbean. I need early night tonight, restless night and waking up to all that last minute tracking didnt help lol.

flooding starting to occur mostly in the far south Roaring creek which is prone to flooding is reporting 1ft water over main road. Near Belmopan some flooding on sections of highways. But we expect that aftr all Belize is pretty flat terrain and after the rain Guatemala got last night expecting more flooding in Belize valley district over the week. 97 L does look pretty impressive already .......keep safe and the danger i see with this seson so far is somewhere is going to get complaceant and get caught short later on. TS Harvey nearly caught me short really not used to having to wake up too storms this way with potential to be hurricane till late sept into Oct. Lesson learned seasons not normal so why would the storms act so. And I've been storm watching ever since Iris in 2001. So I will repeat keep safe and dont underestimate any storm out there this season, the least looking storm could end being the shocker and blow up into something huge.

good advice BZSTORM
these storms have a way of sneaking up on us if we're not careful.
right now wind and rain and thunder occurring in St. Maarten.

Keep safe msbee just been reading the discussion page and TS Irene sounds like she has potential to get her act together pretty quick, though u island folk get to play with storms every year unlike me, and way more experienced at handling their passage, no one right now can afford the damage a big or small intense storm can bring. Here's wishing u the same luck we had with Harvey that she moves swiftly through with minimal damage.
