I think I have the chance of taking next week off work and heading over to the USA. I have always wanted to experience a hurricane. The Atlantic seems to be very active at the moment and in the UK I expect some nasty extra tropical storms this year (especially when they mix with cold polar air!) Anyway, can someone with more experience give me an idea as to where I can be in a weeks time or is this far to soon?

Dude, spend your money on something better. Go to the Empire State Building, the St. Louis Arch, Pike's Peak, the Golden Gate Bridge, anywhere in DC, the Alamo, or Disney World (well, maybe...but that's my fave destination outside TX).

If you're coming to the US, make it worthwhile.

GalvestonDuck hi there! - are you saying that nothing will impact the USA coast next week? I am not a rubbernecker or anything I love severe weather and everything about severe weather in the USA (by that I mean our weather forecast/ warnings are nothing compared to yours) but I have a chance, the cash to do it and I get the impression the Atlantic is gearing up for something big?

UK-I would hold up if I were you. If you want it that badly get your moneys worth and see where he will hit first. BUT if I were you and looking for intense I'd go to New Orleans and by a few hurricanesLOL

Well, the Emerald Coast of the Florida Panhandle is beautiful. Come to Destin Florida with phenomenal sugar white sand beaches and some of the best seafood I have EVER had anywhere.

Not saying that at all. I have no clue. I'm one of the amateurs here. But from what I can tell, Fabian is still pretty far out for US landfall. Not sure what day (or even if) he'll make it here. Depends upon when you'll be here next week also.

Now that thing in the Caribbean that's forecast to come into the Gulf might be a better bet...and I emphasize the word BET. Still don't really know. Some are saying TX/LA. We're watching it. So if you wanna come to TX and wait it out, go for it. And if nothing pans out, you can always zip over to San Antonio and go to Ripley's Believe It Or Not across from the Alamo. They have a "hurricane" room...if you want to call it that. Lot of wind, lot of howling, no water.

Or you could just come to the mall parking lot and we'll get a bunch of hoses and spray you down.

hahahaha thanks guys! Seriously, its difficult to make these decisons from here in the UK. I do need to get this right! Next week, week after my best bet. After that, whilst I am moving to Jersey, Channel Islands, UK it will be more difficult! But the Atlantic seems very active - is the Atlantic not active to you guys?

Yup, it's active alright. I just can't imagine traveling all this way to see a hurricane -- wind, rain, destruction.

It's a good bet, but nothing is certain. I had a teacher who said the only thing constant on Earth is change. This holds true with models as well.

GalvestonDuck, not in it to see people and property get destroyed, however, people here in the UK know very little. I have my own website and I am site admin on a board over here in the UK. I feel the need to educate people. I saw the damage caused by the F4 that hit Pierce City, KS in May. Scarey.

It's terribly dangerous and, very possible nothing at all will hit. BUT, if you're wanting to centralize the location, maybe someplace terribly dull like Tallahassee, Florida, would put you midway between anything hitting on the gulf or the east coast and you could make a drive from there. I wouldn't waste my time in the US doing something like that though man.
