Grand Turk is reporting very heavy rain and strong winds consistent with the regrouping notion earlier and the formation of a well define eye. The northern edge of the system is passing over Salt Cay, Grand Turk and South Caicos now. The rest of the country can expect strong winds and rain within the next two hours. There are confirmed reports of down power lines in the Blue Hills area of Providenciales.

The tail of Irene has been worse than the storm itself when it moved thru Puerto Rico. Many rivers are out of their banks, many mudslides and now the first victim of this event died today. Today alone between 10-15 inches have fallen so far.

thanks for the link to the webcam. I hope things don't get too bad for you there. Know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Thanks! We got very lucky last night. Winds picked up here around 2am to 5am, but never went over 45 knts with at times a some higher gusts. All hurricane force winds stayed offshore - very near, if my calculation is right those really strong winds missed us by not more than 12 miles! I haven't seen any major damages, just a few branches down, some beach erosion, but all seems ok. We did not receive that much rain yet, but I heard that the east coast Punta Cana is under very heavy rain falls, so we might still be in for that here further west. I hope Irene does not cause too much problems for everybody else still on her way.

Yep, this algae is pretty bad here too but I believe I heard that it has been observed to kill the Giant African Snail when applied to gardens. This snail which has a voracious appetite has become quite widespread here over the past seven years or so and has become a major headache for some households.Gustywind wrote:msbee wrote:we're haivng problems here too Gusty

Hope that there's not interraction with the huge activity of the hurricane season in the Carib?! something to meditate, hoping i'm really wrong

I just spoke to my dad in Aguirre, PR. He said this is worse than when the actual storm was over the island. He said his road in front of his house looks like a river flowing. The river behind his house has already crested. He said he and his neighbors are ok, they spent the day putting more "bumpers" along the road to try and keep the water from getting up to their houses. He also said Salinas is under water, you can't get into the town. His neighbor told him that a family member that lives in the mountains to the north, lost their house it started sliding down the mountain from the rain. Unreal!!!!!! Stay safe and be careful!

Re: TS Irene:Our Friends in Caribbean Affected Please Post Condi
hi all, north coast of DR is since about 3 hrs experiencing very strong winds again. Last night / early morning when Irene's center passed just a few miles north of us we were lucky and received only 40-45knts with a few gusts in the 50ies. Daytime was quite, no wind, only some rain (I posted the 'all ok' msg earlier), but now winds are picking up and I mean really picking up again, in the 30-40 knot range again and getting stronger and stronger by the hour!! What's that all about? Irene is supposed to have left us, but for sure doesn't feel like it.

Re: Carib - CA=Rainfall so far in PR between 15-20 inches
Good morning everyone
I may have missed it but do we have totals for how much rain has fallen in PR due to Irene.
I was sorry to hear of the death there Luis.
This storm really hit PR hard and is now going to hit the Bahamas even harder.
and who knows what she will bring to the East Coast of the USA..
wow, what a storm!
On a MUCH less serious note, the sun started shining..a little bit..here yesterday but then last night we had heavy thunder and lightning storms.
I checked this morning and my rain gauge showed 2.5 inches of rain had fallen.
nothing like what PR has received of course, but it does sort of feel like it has been raining here forever.
Be safe Everyone. Wishing good luck for the people of the Bahamas!
