its having some problems maintaining that eye. the tilt is causes convection to refire off centered each time.. it will never be able to make it much stronger than this while its like that. center is still under the SW satellite visible eyewall.. per latest VDM

Doing a graphical/timed map from 1pmUT today it seems those in Nassau have at least 12 hours to prepare for the Hurricanes outer eyewall, with the center crossing very near (or over) in some 18 hours from now.

Very cool movie - thanks.

One thing that strikes me is you can see the eyewall hot-towers fire and build a higher altitude cirrus canopy over the existing CDO.

During this time, about a couple hours after the hot-towers explode, the new cirrus outflow from them wraps around and flows somewhat over the eye.

So, what may look to be a ragged eye developing is in fact deceiving and could really indicate strengthening.

I was zooming down on the rooftops of those settlements on Crooked Island with Google maps. Right now they are being clobbered by intensifying category 3 eyewall winds! You can imagine what they are going through right now in the heart of it.

I was just about to post something similar. Those two little islands with their 600 residents are enduring some hellish weather right now. :(

Nassau, The Bahamas on google maps is even more frightening. The highest part of this island is only 5m at best. The airport being a mere 3m asl.

Here's a website with a pretty good new interactive model plotting application:

An honest opinion from Wxman and other pro mets. I live in the Nags Head area of the OBX. We have stayed during every hurricane, but the wife stated that she didn't want to go through another Isabel again. It looks like the latest models will take it off shore here but we could be near the eyewall too. Our house and business are approx 800 feet from the ocean. Do you think this wil be worse or better than Isabel here.

Are there any storm surge forecasts for Nassau? I'm supposed to travel there in a week.

Not at all true. The highest point of Nassau is 37m.

Irene will likely pass far enough to the east that they will see no significant damage.

So even though this is way east of Miami, if any rain when would we expect to start receiving it?
