MAN! I just got CRUSHED!

#1 Postby Scott_inVA » Thu Aug 28, 2003 7:52 pm

Holy $hit.

Amazing SVR just rolled over here (2nd of the day).
Our Boltek detector recorded 862 strikes/min at one point.

Had an extremely close CG strike (~200 yards away). Tremendous static discharge locked our wx station before losing power.

PC went to UPS; check out our METAR from when we took the hit:

KVALEXIN 290008Z 00196KT 21/19 A3008 P0074 OVC +TSGR

196 knot wind was actually 26MPH but sufficient discharge got into the shielded cable to surge it off the chart.

The +TSGR is heavy rain, thunderstorm, hail...all correct.

I hate sitting on a PC when the wx is like that but the 'puter must like it less. :o

YIKES!

Reminds me of the Sunday storm here, with the first hailstones recorded here in 2 years and not to mention the 30 kt wind gusts and the CG strikes. Ouch...45 CG strikes from the cell every 60 seconds for 20 minutes. Can we say excessive?
