You must not watch it could happen tomorrow and an impact of a hurricane on NYC...

NYC with any type of surge would flood the subways....thats a good possiblity....you break one window you will be breaking a whole lot more because they become projectiles,,thats a good possiblity.....power will be lost to a city with what 8-10MM people? thats a good recipe for chaos...whos being melo-dramatic? this is a REAL possibility. I have been through a lot of hurricanes but a hurricane into NO,Tampa and NYC are worst case scenarios.

Its mostly a lot of hype but this will be of interest and affect high population of people so if media dramatizes everything, they will have a larger audience cause there are so many in that area. In reality, New England is no stranger to coastal storms that generate a lot of wind since they see them multiple times each winter in the form of Northeasters and blizzard which cause the same coastal effects ie beach erosion, wind damage, power outages, flooding and coastal flooding. You wouldnt see this kind of hype if Irene was coming ashore in sparsely populated ares such as north of Brownsville, Tx.

Steve H. wrote:The only reason I bring this up is because there is currently a tropical there is a tropical storm warning since this afternoon for the Atlantic waters from Flagler Beach to Jupiter Inlet from 20 to 60 NM off the coast. That was issued when the Storm had Tropical storm winds from the center at 205 miles. Now its 255 miles. Logic please?

Steve: I get flamed when I bring this up so I ask that people just read it and take it for what it is worth to y'all:
In Florida a TS Watch or Warning is really unimportant.
It does NOT provide a call for action or make us do anything more than maybe bring in a lawn chair or two.
In other places where construction is lacking or a place that is impoverished, a Tropical Storm Warning can yield winds that may seriously imperil property.
Here in Florida, strong afternoon convection thunderstorms give us Tropical Storm conditions quite often.
Now, I know people may point out that TS Warnings are for winds from 39-73 and this is true, but I think that if winds are expected to be at the higher end of the TS wind range, we will be getting a Hurricane Warning anyway.
So, that's my take on why the fact that there is no TS watch or warning is pretty unimportant anyway for Florida.
Be gentle on my folks and try to keep the lectures on topic and to a minimum!

I didn't know that a Nor'Easter was comparable to a category 2 or 3 hurricane.

This article outlines NYC's hurricane dangers. Obviouslt media with dramatize things, but this article outlines some pretty valid issues that are supported by history. Of course if it hits further east on LI, then effects would be less...Same if it weakened significantly.

The problem with NYC is that once you now its going to be bad its too late. Storms move fast up there, and you dont have the luxury or watching to see if it weakens at the last minute. you have to be prepared and hope for the best.

He said if it takes a long time for Irene to turn "we may feel more of this than we'd like". Just figured I'd pass that on....

Is this guy a talking head or is he fairly well respected withing the meteorology field?

Radio Stations I listen to call him an alarmist.
I don't live in his viewing area so I can only pass on that they call him the "Hurricane Terrorist" for the fear he likes to instill in his viewers.

I guess its true they go through nor-easters up there and lose power etc... They are equipped to plow snow out of the way, can't plow water out of the streets in order to make it to a grocery store (which is also underwater anyway)

The Bahamas poster is getting the west side of the core in Georgetown right now. He should have some wind tales later on.

True but your roof will not collapse due to the weight of snow in a hurricane. The flooding will not be everywhere and will recede with time. Snow and ice coat the roads everywhere causing wrecks, people to be stranded in subfreezing temp, etc. until it is plowed away. There bad things about either situation so its kind of a which one is worse. Both can be extreme and even fatal if one doesn't use common sense and prepare.

As far as Nor'easters I know the "Storm of the Century", not the 1993 storm, but the November 25, 1950 storm brought 100 mph+ winds and a major "storm surge" to the Northeast and Mid Atlantic. That event was a historic one, but still can't compare to what a major hurricane or even Cat 2 moving at 50 mph can do.

I live in the Fort Lauderdale area and can say Phil Ferro is no alarmist. He's very realist and at about average when it comes to Chief Mets. He's young so he's got plenty of experience and potential ahead of him. I hope this can put closure to the rating of a local Met in this thread.

Did you read the article...SNOW does not cause distruction...in general it just piles up, at worst can cause car accidents and roof collapse. It melts and things are all better. Sea water mixed with sewage does not just disappear and dry up and all is betteer. Noreasters and blizzards generally do not carry sustained hurricane force winds. Blizzards do not generally break windows. Nor do they have the time and strength over water and the typical trajectory needed to cause significant surge in the city. Point is, NO it wont be the end of the world... but NY aint built to take the eastern eyewall of a cat 3. I went through katrina and I have been through a 3 foot snow storm...they are NOT in any way, shape, or form, similar.
