Extra ferry service to and from MV and Nantucket now underway. Ferry service to be suspended during storm and will probably resume sometime on Monday (taken from WCVB, Channel 5 News website)

Re: Irene - Northeast US Prep and Impact
Even *if* Irene weakens to a Category 1 hurricane before reaching NYC and points north she'll still pack a powerful punch. That energy doesn't just dissipate. The energy associated with the center and the northeast quadrant will be enough to push a lot of water inland and there'll be plenty of other mischief going on as well, like power outages, torrential downpours, and tornadic activity. Don't let your guard down until she passes your latitude.

Re: Irene - Northeast US Prep and Impact
I'm coming away with the feeling that here in these parts (Fall River MA) people are not taking this system as a threat in the least.
As one friend posed to me this AM..."why do forecasters spout such gloom & doom?" My response was "Prepare for the worst and hope for the best".
Having been thru Ike as a CAT4 while living in the Turks and Caicos Islands (and many hurricanes in the 50's here in NE) "extreme caution" is a household word here. We are prepared as can be with all necessary supplies that might be needed and wish everyone in Irene's path to remain safe.
Will post if and when conditions here change.

You're welcome! I work at Sugar House. I'm not sure what's going to be left.
Make sure you just get to higher ground BEFORE the storm hits.

Re: Irene - Northeast US Prep and Impact
Me and a few peers at Rutgers are organizing an "intercept" operation somewhere along the NJ coast. We were going to travel to Long Island but this newest projected track makes that appear unnecessary.
The current location I'm eying is Long Branch, where we went for Hurricane Earl, as that portion of the NJ Coast is significantly less prone to surge.

No, but you can double click on your state and zoom in by double clicking the area of interest after selecting the storm category.

Originally from CT and I have been in contact with my mom over the course of the afternoon. She said that they are taking precautions already. The private high school, where she works, they are very concerned for flooding and have already brought in extra sump pumps and are planning on putting generators into every building. At home, they are pulling down all hanging plants tonight and are going to start to bring in their outdoor furniture inside tomorrow as well.

I have family in Lynbrook, Freeport, Merrick and Valley Station who I'm trying to convince to heed warnings and evacuate early.
All of you in Irene's path, you are in my thoughts and please be safe!

Hurricane watches now issued for the Delaware beaches and up to New Castle DE. I am one county to the south-west of Dover DE and we have TS Watches now issued. If that storm moves even the slightest bit westward, it could get ugly even here in the mid-shore (Delmarva) area. If anyone is south of me on this peninsula, please watch out for flooding - the SLOSH models are frightening.

Gov. Christie has issued evac orders for Cape May County, Atlantic County soon to follow as per the EMS. IMO expect Ocean and Monmouth Counties to follow suit either tonight or tomorrow morning. With the latest track I wouldn't through out Burlington County as well.
I'll be here in Mt. Holly keeping you guys updated the best I can as she comes through. Current NHC track has her less than 18 miles from my house.

also pointing out, NHC has the current track hitting just west of coney isl. and a few miles south of Manhattan, with the way the N. Eastern side of this storm has been that can be a life saver for NYC but catastrophic for Long Island
(worrying about the Statue of Liberty)...
I.M.O. I am not a professional weather man and will be wrong unless otherwise proven true after the fact.
