I'll be here in Mt. Holly keeping you guys updated the best I can as she comes through. Current NHC track has her less than 18 miles from my house.

Thanks that would be great as my whole family is in your area, well south Jersey,Pennsville, Pennsgrove, etc. and I mean whole family , my daughter,my brothers and their families, neices nephews.

I've been trying to get my HTC incredible to tether to my lappy to no avail...I guess I'll just keep it plugged and access the sit through my phone. That should get me through the storm on battery (def expecting power to be out) and of course assuming the mobile network stays up 8-)

I'll keep posting Evac orders as they come across NJ 101.5 tomorrow. Hoping NW Burlington is voluntary only, I may be putting myself in danger but hey watching all these storms all the time and finally having one coming at me, I want to be here when she arrives.

Thank you Bizzles!

Just make sure that you do evacuate if you have to. There's a lot of people, especially our friends from the Gulf coast that will tell you it is not worth it to be there or stay with your home if the government is telling you to get out.

If you have to evacuate, PLEASE remember your furry children! There are many hotels/motels that are pet friendly:

Our son and his wife live in Islip and we're trying to find out if they are preparing. Also about the same distance from Great south Bay. My husband vividly recalls the Long Island Express Hurricane of 1938 when he was a little boy.

I grew up in Nesconset. :)

Look at the storm surge link at the beginning of this thread. See what the storm surge will look like for a Cat 1. Long Islanders are REALLY limited with evacuation routes as you well know. If you have family in upstate NY or CT, see if you can stay with them.

Still working on the family in Long Island... they're within 2 miles from the beach and don't want to leave. We'll keep at 'em. In the meantime, thought I'd share some info parents could use to help children understand all this. I've shared this with my students and have had my own children pack their favorite things for evacuating (or for just riding the storm out in the hallway). We didn't use a pillowcase, but it's a great idea. Stay safe everyone!

If you get wiped out, who is there to ride them, get the #$%$#%$ out, took about an hour, I had to use my aunt as the clincher, he said I have been here a long time, never left, this is hard. I told him put your bikes on the trailer, pack up stuff that can't be replaced and go. You can't play with this one. Thank god he said he will probably leave in the morning

My cousin in south Jersey, (cape may area) said they are caling this the storm of the century, but are they leaving??? NO, they live one block in from the light house on cape may. All I can do is keep my fingers crossed and PRAY!!!!! PLEASE if they tell you to leave, LEAVE

I used to live in West Cape May and have spent lots of time at the LH. Oldtimers shared with me that a major storm there put the corner of Sunset and Broadway under five feet of water. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the storm.

Found this which may be of interest:
http://www.hurricaneville.com/1821_hurricane.htm

"The Great Hurricane of 1821 was a classic Cape Verde storm. Originating off the African coast, the hurricane was picked up by ships near Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The storm headed northward, where on September 3rd, it was in Cape Hatteras by dawn, the Virginia Capes by noon, and in Delaware Bay by mid-afternoon according to the book, Great Storms of the Jersey Shore written by Larry Savadore and Margaret Thomas Buchholz. Coastal areas in the tip of Southern New Jersey such as Cape May were separated from the rest of that Southern Jersey Peninsula while heavy tree damage was reported on Long Beach Island in Ocean County.

According to an article written by Kirk Moore and Todd Bates of the Asbury Park Press on July 23, 2006, Cape May was known as Cape Island, which was appropriate, especially when a "wall of water surged across the peninsula from Delaware Bay to the sea." Today, tourists visit the Cape May Point and its lighthouse, a place where storm surge, wind and waves forced residents including fishermen, farmers, and children to flee for higher ground.

It was the only time on record that a major hurricane has impacted the Garden State. The hurricane produced 100 mph winds as far west as Philadelphia, and a thirteen foot storm surge in what is now today, the Battery Park section of lower Manhattan. The surge was the highest ever recorded in New York Harbor. Continuing further to the north, the Great Hurricane of 1821 didn't stop there. It roared through New England as well producing winds between minimal Category One strength, and strong Category Two strength on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.
___________

Evacuating Cape May by car is not easy. I can understand your family's reluctance. If shelters are set up locally, perhaps that would be a viable option.

addendum: Just read that there are no hurricane shelters in Cape May County. You could suggest this, which might scare them sufficiently, ...on Galveston Island (where I've also lived LOL) prior to Rita the officials who couldn't get some people to evacuate insisted they write contact information for next of kin in Sharpie on their arms to aid in identification. True story.

I live on Upper east side of manhattan on 96th street on the 5th floor.. not a highrise building. I was considering leaving but there are no evacuation orders in effect yet for my "zone" so I am staying put with supplies, food, water. I don't think I need to worry about flooding/storm surge on my floor..

Can't believe I am going through this after just moving from FLORIDA and dodging many bullets there.

Latest track has her off to the east more today...IMO think we'll see what she's got today.

Expect more evacs today, have already heard unconfirmed reports of EVERYONE east of RT. 9 will be evac'd. Expect an update later this morning. Here's everything since 11PM last night:

MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERED IN CAPE
MAY COUNTY

New Jersey's Cape May County has ordered mandatory evacuations of everyone in the county ahead of Hurricane Irene.

County officials say visitors and everyone on barrier islands should leave Thursday and those on the mainland should head out by Friday.

Mandatory Evacuations For Parts of Atlantic County
All Atlantic County shore communities east of Route 9, including Brigantine, Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate and Longport, are under a voluntary evacuation at 8 p.m. Thursday and a mandatory evacuation effective 6 a.m. Friday, the county confirmed in an email.

Mandatory Evacuations For Long Beach Island Starting Friday

Emergency management officials on Long Beach Island have issued a voluntary evacuation for now, but starting at 8 am Friday, a mandatory evacuation will go into effect. Shelters at Southern Regional High School will be open at 8 am Friday.

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP) — Traffic tie-ups are a problem for at least some of the people ordered to evacuate the New Jersey shore.

Madelin Muir-Loughry of The Village, Fla., said her daughter and her family sat on Cape May County's Route 47 for four hours Thursday night and were barely able to move.

The family, including four children, lives in Falls Church, Va., and was vacationing in the New Jersey resort town.

Cape May County ordered people on its barrier islands to leave Thursday. People on the mainland are to leave Friday.

Neither state police nor Cape May County officials said they were aware of such severe jams on the road.

Gov. Chris Christie has ordered that the road be made westbound only, but not until 6 p.m. Friday.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has ordered tolls suspended on two major evacuation routes as the state prepares for Hurricane Irene.

The governor has urged all residents and visitors to leave barrier islands and shore areas for safer locations.

To make the evacuation easier, the governor said Thursday night that tolls will be temporarily suspended on the Garden State Parkway south of the Raritan River and the Atlantic City Expressway beginning at 8 a.m. Friday.

Christie said Routes 47 and 347 in Cape May County will be closed to eastbound traffic and all lanes will be used to move traffic westward beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. He said police will tightly control access to those highways to ensure motorists' safety.

A mandatory evacuation order is in effect for Cape May County.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City's 11 casinos raced to secure cash, stack sandbags and shoo away guests as they braced for a possible shutdown due to Hurricane Irene after the city ordered a citywide evacuation.

The shutdown would be only the third time since legalized gambling began here in 1978 that the casinos were closed.

Some casinos were planning to close as early as 6 am Friday, when a mandatory evacuation of Atlantic City was due to take effect. Others planned to wait for the result of a 2 p.m. meeting with emergency management officials on whether to shut down the nation's second-largest gambling market for the storm.

Resorts co-owner Dennis Gomes estimates the lost weekend could cost his casino $3.5 million to $4 million.

WRIGHTSTOWN, N.J. (AP) — The U.S. military is evacuating aircraft from a base in central New Jersey in preparation for Hurricane Irene.

Officials at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst say they're actively preparing for winds approaching hurricane force.

Air Force transport aircraft and tankers based there are being sent to Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. The New Jersey Air National Guard is sending its KC-135 refueling aircraft to a McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas.

Airlines are beginning to cancel flights and get planes out of the way as Hurricane Irene barrels toward the U.S. East Coast.

The storm is likely to force hundreds of flights to be canceled through this weekend and create delays that could ripple across the country.

On Thursday, airlines offered passengers the option of free rebooking for trips to many East Coast cities.

Check the emergency management links on the front page for New York. I haven't heard if NY is under a state of emergency yet.
