Thanks! You stay safe as well!

Right now we are experiencing very heavy rain. The drops are relatively big.

Also here http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?site_no=02089000 is Neuse River @ Goldsboro real time information for anyone interested in following this basin.

Found on FB:

Canal Drive on Carolina Beach is completely flood and closed. Just walked back to the house and the water was close to my waist. That was my last trip outside!

Will try to report from ground zero (Beaufort, NC, Carteret County) as often as possible. Heavy rain showers passing thru now, with some areas already picking up a couple of inches already. Winds are gusting out of the east at up to about 20-25 with the passing squalls. Tide is already quite high, already over the decking on docks, and at the top of some sea walls in the sounds. Already have waves from the sounds breaking in a few low waterfront buildings in Morehead City and Atlantic Beach. Water already up into the dune line on Bogue Banks (Atlantic Beach). 5 to 8 feet breakers on the south facing beaches of Bogue Banks, pretty sure they are much higher on the east facing beach north of Cape Lookout, but there is nobody over there to report on that. Areas east of Beaufort of US highway 70 and NC highway 12 already have sound water up to the edge of the roads. Will be getting impassible within a few hours at this rate, I doubt the tide will fall as we should be moving towards low tide, but maybe levels will stay steady until the surge arrives later in the morning. No power failures yet that I have heard of. Shelters are being utilized by a few at least. Stores are closing now, and some stations have ran out of gas already. Grocery stores were still well stocked as of a couple of hours ago, so hopefully everyone got all of the supplies they needed. Highest gust that I have seen recored so far was 44 mph in Morehead City. Will report more later if power and internet are still up.

WCTI-12 reporting water over the waterfront streets in Swansboro, and water to the edge of the road on NC24 highway in Swansboro/Cedar Point. Reports of power failures in Jacksonville and Richlands, all in Onslow County.

Thanks Stephanie and mf_dolphin! Capepoint, I'm right up the road from you in Morehead. Unfortunately, it doesn't look good... last night I was over on Fort Macon and the ocean was already to the dunes... not sure if any of that was early effects of Irene or if it was purely the higher than normal tides. This evening at Atlantic Beach, the ocean was up to the retaining wall at the circle in places. And this is just the beginning! This is the first time I remember hearing about curfews... have you experienced them before? We do not have any here in Morehead City, but I heard Beaufort and Bogue Banks both have 8pm curfews. Probably a good idea to help keep people from getting out on the roads. Stay safe over there in Beaufort!

I was over at the circle just before dark. Usually they have curfews in all the towns and the county has issued them as well before. Dont think they have ever really enforced them, unless somebody was being an idiot. It just gives the police a reason to stop anybody out and about and prevents thefts and looting. Usually if you have a valid reason for being out and are going somewhere like work they will let you go.

On another note, both bridges to Bogue Banks have now been closed to beach-bound traffic. If you leave the island, you cant get back on until after the storm.

Orion and Capepoint, I will be thinking about you guys tonight and tomorrow. I am to the west of you near Zebulon, and my Mom has a place down on Bogue Bank. My Mother-in-law lives near Washington, NC on the Pamlico river, so I am sure the water is rising there as the wind pushes the water inland. The weather here is calm, with some rain showers coming through occasionally. Good luck through the storm and stay safe! I hope Corolla makes it through as I am supposed to be there in a week.

Getting reports of radar-indicated waterspouts, tornados, or possible funnel clouds in eastern NC now. Confirmed trees down west of Morehead City in the Newport area. Power flickering in west Morehead City.

Thanks 72Packer!

Yes, capepoint, I noticed the tornado signatures showing up on radar too... I hate it when they start popping up at night. Also, parts of Sea Level, NC have lost power.

For those interested, the radar on my site has visible (or IR at night) satellite with radar overlaid and the official NHC track... I also turned on tornado warnings... hope you find it helpful... http://orionweather.net/index.php?content=radar.html

Stay safe everyone!

Thanks Orion!

Here on Brice's Creek in New Bern, been experiencing more and more periods of strong gusts and heavier rain. Water level is still not up to my dock level, surprisingly, but it has risen about 18" throughout the afternoon. That will certainly change, but I think they've lowered the surge level forecasts a good deal.

I still have my Dish Network though! I just hope that when I lose power, it won't be until the morning. Doubt the tv will last much longer!

Everybody stay safe out there!

You can expect the strongest of the weather as the center approaches land...multiple tornado signatures are likely in addition to the wind, rain and surge. You won't be able to see the tornado and depending on the strenth of the overall winds you may not even be able to hear it.

Take cover and stay safe.....do what you North Carolinians know to do, and, as Churchill once said "Keep calm and carry on."

The London Telegraph is providing live updates from all Irene-affected areas, refreshed every 90 seconds: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/8726320/Hurricane-Irene-live.html

The T provides excellent reporting on things British and quite a bit of American news, too.

You also might like to see how the very popular tabloid Daily Mail is reporting the storm: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... loses.html

Lost power here @ 1:30 am, now restored at 2:30 am. That was a nice surprise, I thought it was all over with. Surely won't be the only time though, I'm sure.
