maybe because the NE usually has no reason to be here unless they are weather enthusiasts or they are busy getting to safety?

I knew I wrote that wrong. Since they normally don't experience these storms as often as the Gulf does, they don't even know storm2k exists because they don't need info like we do so often.

Re: ATL: IRENE - Hurricane - Discussion
Well so far we have had a few gusts to the 40's, but mostly winds are in the lower 20's. I'm about a mile or two from the ocean, so they are probably getting worse out there on the beach. I will tell you this, Irene sure has some rain. This is the wettest hurricane I remember in a long time.

I think people are just in a wait and see mode right now. Not sure if the estimates will pan out, or if they underprepared.
I get a kick out of some of the people on other boards making plans to go to work or school in NYC Monday as normal. I'm not sure they realize the full gravity of what might happen in the next couple of days.

Don't forget FLA and the Carolinas! I'm talking not only about posters from the South but our mets and international posters like KWT. I miss seeing their analysis as well as Derek Ortt's. And just because my location says NY does not mean I live here full time. I appreciate reading the comments and analysis of weather enthusiasts of this board but I hate it when people stop posting just because a storm may not be threatening their area anymore.

fci wrote:Can anybody post what typically happens surge-wise to these structures with landfalling storms. This area is no stranger to landfalling storms and I am curious as to how this ranks so far with other storms and can hopefully put into perspective the effects of Irene compared to what usually occurs
In the ones I have been through: floyd, isabel, ophelia, and other smaller ones... I have not seen it like it is now. Still 9 or 10 hours from landfall and the amount of water is already incredibly high. Some of what I saw this evening reminded me of what it was like during or right after some of the others (as far as water, not wind damage). Roads were already flooding in Morehead City and Atlantic Beach as early as 6pm or so. As far as the Morehead waterfront, I have seen it up to the floors of those buildings, but I think it will surpass that with Irene. Someone else can probably comment about the storms before Floyd. The Channel Marker restaurant on the Atlantic Beach causeway, which was shut for a few months after damage from Ophelia already has waves from the sound breaking on the structure... and we still have all day tomorrow to deal with even more water that Irene will push in as she makes landfall somewhere near here in the morning.

Bring on the rain, please. We need SOMETHING to put out the fire in the Great Dismal Swamp!

Just like Jon Snow..."I know nothing" except what I know, and most of what I know is gathered by the fine people of the NHC

I'd say a landfall Morehead City 11amUT, 8 hours from now with speed being picked up increasingly from the gulf stream.
