Just want to make an observation. Looking at latest visible, it looks to be moving on a more NE course and its taking more jogs to the east. Its possible it could go more to the east side of the track.

Well, it sure has been a god sent for lil people like me who HATE the media catastrophy scenario. It ruins people's common sense and makes unbelievers of so many.

Probably about 99% lol. I'm on the shift that is supposed to report on Sunday Morning, but am on recall standby now. The other 2 shifts are already on duty for the duration. If it gets too bad, they will call us in earlier. Listening to radio they are running pretty hard right now with alarms, trees down, electrical fires, and ems calls. Most agencies will cease normal operations when winds reach 50 or 60 mph sustained, but we are not there yet.
Weatherwise, Carteret County seems to be in a little lull right now, in between bands.

Ike had the same issue with double maxima winds and continuous EWRC in the GOM....its not something we have not seen before. regardless its the surge that matters....the NHC had IKE at a cat 3 coming in but he never made it...

local media reporting 1 storm-related injury from a person that was in a mobile home struck by a tornado in Belhaven. Mobile home was demolished, fire crews removed the victim, and they are being transported by ground unit to medical center.

Well here's my report from southern Pitt County:

Man, this is one slow developing storm. It's been raining somewhat steadily for the past couple of hours here, according to my 'official Irene rain bucket' I've received about an inch of rain total. A couple of gusts, but no major wind, in fact it's calm right now. I do have an actual anemometer, so if real winds come I can provide true readings. According to my redneck barometer, pressure has dropped slightly (water has risen .25" in the past 5 hours.)

Strange things I've noticed: The rain isn't really 'tropical.' In previous hurricanes the drops were smaller, sometimes almost a dense mist, while right now it's just like a steady rain with normal drops. The lack of wind is also strange. Bertha and Fran both delivered wind along with the initial rain bands. Floyd delivered a huge punch of rain, a torrential downpour, accompanied with strong gusts. The good news for me is the creek next to my house was a trickle earlier today, so I'm not anticipating a flood in my yard (for Floyd it was at the edge of the approx 10' deep banks thanks to Dennis.)

I actually got tired of all the coverage which contained no no new info, so for the past couple of hours I watched a movie. Think I'm going to watch the other one I got. I'll be here as long as I have internet, and will give updates as conditions warrant.

Yes, indeed, may we hold you close in though to help you during your hours on duty and beyond.. Many a time in the past I walked in those shoes, and emergency responders always have our respect.

For NYC city especially, it will show projected storm surge zones, evacuation areas, ConEd power outages, etc.

Type your location in the white search box to get a marker on the map, then click on various menu options on the right side of the page.

AWESOME INFO.

I needed this tonight as I have a close friend who has just moved to Hoboken 2 weeks ago, and I have been trying to convince her how bad the flooding will be there. This map was indispensable.

It does seem good. I shared it on Facebook earlier and several friends picked up and shared it too.

I have a lot of family in VA, NJ, NY and CT and everyone thinks I'm over reacting ... gah. I'm not but they keep thinking that the tv people are making a big ado about it. I'm just trying to get them to be aware of what's going on and be safe.

as far as the job, not right now! Recall stand-by means no alcohol lol.
As far as hurricanes, not really. Kind of burned out on them. I can remember going thru every one that's struck eastern NC since Ginger in the early 70's.
