On air I heard mention that winds of up to 65 mph possible this evening here. Seems a bit too much, but who knows.

Still 15 gusting to 25 mph here, another heavy band went through the past half hour. Local forecasters say the worst (4-6 ft storm surge and gusts up to 60 mph) will occur between roughly midnight & noon tomorrow. What concerns me is that the wind direction during that 12 hour period is forecast to be generally out of the south, which is the worst direction here for surge flooding during storms like nor'easters in fall & winter. Because at south to sw wind pushes the water/waves from the Bay ashore and up the river estuary.

While CNN and the major networks are focused on the New York City metro, rivers are breaking the banks and dams are failing all across New England.

There's a flooding catastrophie developing that is not getting the press that it needs.

It's rather weird out here. For a while it could be quite calm, but every so often - for up to a few minutes - a punishing and damaging gust of wind comes down. I estimate a gust near 55 mph blew in a while ago, then otherwise it was quite calm.

Eastport Maine, on the West bank of the Bay, the closest automated reporting station to my location. Things are getting windy, and choppy out there.

A little piece of history, Irene's landfall at Little Egg Inlet in New Jersey was the first Hurricane landfall in the state since September 16th, 1903.

Wow what a day... a lot of trees down in Montreal and at least 180,000 Hydro-Quebec customers are without power in the Montreal region only.

The damage in my neighbourhood.

Gusts up to 100 km/h (62 mph) reported just east of Montreal.

Still 30 gusting to 45 mph, or 48 gusting to 72 km/h, lights starting to flicker. I have the generator ready. Hasn't been any rain, other than drizzle, here for about three hours.

Beautiful sight tonight - except the winds were still VERY strong at the time (gust about 45-50 mph), you can see the trees all moving rapidly. Sun had broken on the far western horizon. Still a bit misty at the time, there was a good rainbow to the south (can't see it on there).

Peak gust to 48 mph out of the South, thus far, the tidal river is starting to flood the backyard. :(

It seems like Irene's rain shield was mostly on her northern side. She wasn't symetrical in any shape or fashion. She had been forecasted to hit NJ and Long Island, but she hit NYC instead. I wonder if the moisture was "super concentrated" in the northern side due to her shape.

I hope that the flooding doesn't get more serious in New England.

It's horrible there! This has to be the worst storm ever for Vermont.

Here's a short video from the edge of Lake Ontario, in Oswego, NY, earlier (mid-afternoon on the 28th of August). Plenty of wave action, it had just stopped raining shortly before I took the video, and the winds were not too bad. We recorded sustained between 16 and 22 mph, with gusts up to almost 30 mph.
