A Tsunami Warning is now in effect which includes the coastal areas of Alaska from Unimak
Pass, Alaska (80 miles NE of Dutch Harbor) to Amchitka Pass, Alaska (125 miles W of Adak).

At 2:56 AM Alaskan Daylight Time on September 2, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.1 occurred 45 miles/72 Km southeast of Amukta Pass, Alaska . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.) Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis. If a tsunami has been generated, the waves will first reach Adak, Alaska at 3:52 AM AKDT on September 2. Estimated tsunami arrival times and maps along with safety rules and other information can be found on the WCATWC web site.

Wapmerr, the theoretical damage and injury engine has calculated that NO damage or Injuries will be inflicted based on the shaking.

GDACS calculations are reporting only a tsunami risk of 0.1 meter in unpopulated Nikolski

Apart from the tsunami danger, there is NO real shaking danger as only 188 people will endure a light shaking.

September 2, 2011 – ALASKA

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck the Fox Islands chain off the coast of Alaska. The earthquake struck at a depth of 35.5 km and the epicenter was 45 km (27 miles) SW of Amukta Island, Alaska and 1658 km (1030 miles) WSW of Anchorage, Alaska. This is the second 7.0+ magnitude earthquake to strike the region in 70 days. A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck nearly the identical region at a depth of 62 km on June 24, 2011. The region is prone to large earthquakes. According to USGS data, the average number of 7.0-7.9 earthquakes that strike the planet a year is 15. Today’s earthquake makes 13 such quakes so far for the year of 2011.
