0zECMWF forecasting anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow for NYC for tomorrow evening/night. It looks like the NE is going to get an early taste of winter!

I live in central MA. I have seen snow in October before, but I have NEVER seen 6-12 inches. Crazy!

I just set up the generator. I think this may be like the ice storm a few years ago. We were without power for weeks. The fall foliage is very late this year. Allot of the trees are flush with green. Some have begun to turn, but we have not even had to rake yet. Unusual set up for sure. I have never seen this scenario in central MA before.

I just got back from food shopping, for all the hype the store was not crowded, I don't know if people have been listening to the news or not, but at least I am ready

This system is no joke. I hope people take it seriously. with a super high water content snow+wind+leaves remaining on many trees, power outages could start with just 3 inches or so of accumulation. with a large, high population area expecting more than double that, we have the set the stage for power grid carnage. there is potential for widespread power outages not unlike that experienced with hurricanes or large ice storms. should that materialize, some unlucky folks could be without power for and extended time (more than a week). if you're in the heavy snow threat area, don't treat this as a normal snow event. prepare for prolonged power outage potential.

Agreed...we just had a good cover of 6-9 inches aross the Denver metro area. It isn't half as densely forested as any town in the northeast and there was fairly widespread power problems. Certainly not entire towns without power though. I would think 4-5is probably the threshold for power problems in the northeast.

Re: The Yeah its Really October Nor'easter Discussion
I'm just on the southern edge of the snow line. It looks like it's running along the Delaware River right now from Wilmington, DE to Trenton, NJ. I've seen some big wet flakes drop and some ice on my windshield and hear on the windows on occassion.
I remember the last measurable snowfall in Philadelphia on October 10, 1979. I just got my driver's license in the summer, so it was my first snow I had to drive through. I had driven my car to high school that day. I remember cleaning it off and then fish-tailing it out of the high school parking lot. I wasn't the only one either. Crazy!

Those are some pretty impressive forecast snow totals and on top of that it looks like the wind is going to be a big problem as the pressure gradient tightens later on tonight.

Re: The Yeah its Really October Nor'easter Discussion
I am in Auburn MA. Here we are, all proud of the brand new snow blower, and as we are about to put fuel in, Crack! Crash!....a freakin tree falls on it. Now the sounds of limbs falling are a constant "snap crackle pop" I am simply mystified, as to how we still have power. The storm was not supposed to really get cranking until around 8:00. The trees began falling at about 5:00 just from the weight of the cement like snow.
Think it is going to be epic evening.

Got a friend who is visiting NYC for the weekend...he said they have about 6 to 8 inches of snow, and widespread trees down, along with power outages. NWS is saying wind gusts up to 55 mph tonight in the area, and are saying the damage tonight from the winds could be "much more serious" than what occurred today (and they said they had already received numerous reports of trees and powerlines down, so much more serious would look more like a Cat 2 or Cat 3 hit, probably).

It's snowing now but it's sticking to the cars and lawns. Incredible!
