It appears that the 00Z GFS is further south with the upper level low! (The system for Tonight-Tuesday)

After looking over the GFS Ensembles, SREF, and past analogs of the 500mb pattern I think north central Texas might have a decent chance of some post frontal frozen precip on Thursday.

Wild weather day on tap for Texas. This Monday morning, we have heavy snow falling in the Midland/Odessa area and we have severe storms and even tornado warnings in southeast Texas. In between ... showers/storms.
Had a few heavy downpours during the night here at the Portastorm Weather Center in scenic southwest Travis County. That's it so far.

Tornado warning here. Constant rumble of thunder and the winds are picking up. Hopefully the storm will stay just to my north.

Radar estimates of three-inches of rain in parts of Grayson County overnight, more on the way.
Chilly, raw January day with wind and rain. Water standing everywhere and runoff has occurred.
Good for continued relief of drought conditions!

BTW, tweet from HW this morning:
"@Henry_Margusity: Very cold air and prolong cold weather is coming for the last half of January. La Nina is croaking so pattern is adjusting back to winter."

Speaking of La Nina, the downward trend of the daily SOI index has stopped today.

The storm woke us up around 1 am last night in the Austin area. Lots of lightning and LOUD KABOOM thunder, then POURING rain. Sounded like there was tiny hail briefly in the mix. Not sure
. Lasted a good 20 minutes or so. I'm amazed we got that much in such a short time. That's about the equivalent of 2.4 inches an hour!
Helps with drought alleviation!

Speaking of drought alleviation, hopefully the grounds around here are more soaked and provide some run-off. With the rain we had in December, it did little to raise the reservoirs since there wasn't a whole lot of run-off into them.
I got out on a 6 mile bike ride on my favorite nature trail yesterday. Was nice and overcast with temps in the 50's.

Wonderful rain overnight and today. House shaking thunder in January is pretty cool. Chilly, damp next couple of days and then some colder air by Thursday. At least it will feel like January. To flip or not to flip, that is the question. Keeping fingers crossed for late month and into Feb for some real winter!

Re: Texas Winter 2011-2012...
So the 12Z GFS run continued what the 6Z run started, picking up on the upper level energy previously off the coast of San Diego moving into northern Mexico later this week/digging the northern jet with it. If the upper air pattern depicted by this model were to verify, there are numerous analogs that match this pattern for significant winter storms in this part of the country! Let's see if the other model suites this morning catch onto a potential surprise winter weather event this weekend!!

You folks in north central and north Texas are going to love the 12z GFS run for this weekend!

Okay then, I'm going up into the attic to take down the sleds and start preparing them for use. A nice coat of carnuba wax speeds up the run.

About the only correction I would to that map is moving that 6" swath over the Texarkana area. Other than that, the map looks pretty good.
